Heartfeltpastels: So I've seen people call sega/clpl cowards or otherwise express disappointment about one specific choice Ena 5 made and I want to look why I think its not that shallow and give my view, feelings, and reasons as a trans person & potentially hot take on why I think it was the right choice thematically for this story at this time. Image: Ena's untrained card from the event. (long posts below about 'With Our Hands, Covered in Wounds' themes, message, and meaning and spoilers be warned.) The Ena's card art expresses some of key themes for the event and of why the choice was made doing things and how it suits the event. The card hides their expressions from us, the readers, to grant that time and expressions to only them. To me this approach is meant to restore Mizuki's intimacy, privacy, & dignity that had been trampled over in her past many times... to allow her that vulnerability of coming out with only those she truly trusted and choose for herself. And trying to both could manage to protect and restore that on screen & keep those themes while having Mizuki come out to the reader at such a low point barely escaping her deep seated self-hate when she is still so clearly very anxious, apologetic, in pain, guilty, and shaky about herself in Kanade's card episode 2... It would be near an impossible task to do both... I certainly wouldn't feel confident trying to be the one to thread that needle...

And to my optimistic side suggests that maybe will come a time when Mizuki can express herself honestly to the world in the narrative & thus the reader/audience and say things about herself, but now is not that time regardless. Furthermore when considering this event story's strongest point is how it attempts to tackle the spiral of the brand of intense self-hate, shame, self-isolation, seeing yourself as a pain & burden to others, and other negative emotions tied to that experiences many trans fem people have and will face... (myself included) I think a coming out part on screen would stand to risk alienating those who benefit most from the message of the story if it was done it could make the story seem too perfect for them to relate to still... If Mizuki could say it without any issues despite her just barely escaping those issues. Or conversely letting Mizuki slip back into it some and showing that self-hate & negativity towards herself or identity would risk being too painful a reminder and undermining the message the story was trying to convey by digging those feelings to the surface... and may lead certain people to take the wrong thing about her character... While these choices like many creative choices come its own drawbacks. I just wish people would see that as the creative choice made for this story telling and framing made around this when it was clearly crafted with so much care and understanding for transgender hardships rather than simply "cowardice" as the motive. Then there is the part on a meta-narrative level, that's probably my real hot take about Ena 5. The possibility that clpl choose to do this to critique/make commentary about how people act/treat queer people with the expectation and the pressures of coming out. (I say as someone who is openly trans *partially* to avoid the pain that coming out tends to entail.)

To express to the reader that you aren't owed or entitled to someone else's coming out nor their identity and that knowing it shouldn't be a prerequisite for you to try to sympathize with them, treat them with kindness, to be friends with them, and to cherish them. 3 images: screenshots from event chapter 8: Mizuki facing Ena: 'I don't there is anything good by being with me.' Ena facing Mizuki: '!... Something like that isn't what I want to talk about!' Ena: 'Compared to Mizuki being gone, that doesn't matter, at all!!' And to write the story like they did with Ena saying that doesn't matter compared to Mizuki's meaning to her and not pressing Mizuki to talk about it only expressing what she wants to support and be with Mizuki, then have that scene following not be for the reader, is possibly the most effective way to try to get that message to someone. 1 images: screenshots from event chapter 8: Ena: Because Mizuki is, a precious friend!!

And the commission song only further this train of thought (lyric tls by alyyy) Images of Song lyrics from 'Admiring the late cherry blossom' What I want to at the least is to simply stay by your side Even as I wanted you to cry in front of me, at the least How about we stand here and talk? If you don't want to talk about anything Then let's enjoy the beautiful scenery from here. And if you don't want to look at anything, then let's stay like this forever. While closing our eyes. So long that it's you, I'm happy. With Ena directly saying (to Mizuki) she just wants be by Mizuki's side and wanted to let Mizuki be vulnerable about her, but that it's fine if Mizuki doesn't want to go anywhere, talk, or see anything, that just being by her side is enough she affirms, even if Mizuki couldn't be open about who she is yet.
