US Department of Energy Directs Michigan Coal-Fired Power Plant to Stay Operational Until August 21st The U.S. Department of Energy has directed a Michigan coal-fired power plant, the Consumers Energy J.H. Campbell plant, to remain operational until at least August 21st. This directive aims to proactively address potential electricity shortages across the central United States. The plant, located in Ottawa County, was slated to cease operations on May 21st as part of Consumers Energy's shift towards renewable energy sources. The facility, which began service in 1962, has a generating capacity of up to 1,450 megawatts, capable of powering approximately 1 million customers. Michigan state regulators have strongly opposed the federal order, asserting that it's unwarranted given the current energy surplus within the state. Dan Scripps, chair of the Michigan Public Service Commission, stated that Michigan is currently generating more electricity than required, eliminating the need for an emergency declaration within the state or within the broader Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) region. MISO is responsible for coordinating the electrical grid across 15 U.S. states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. While MISO anticipates sufficient electricity supply throughout the summer, they acknowledge a “potential for elevated risk” during periods of extreme weather conditions. Energy Secretary Chris Wright’s order mandates that both MISO and Consumers Energy ensure the Campbell plant's availability for operation. Consumers Energy confirmed they will adhere to the directive and the plant will resume electricity production. The Sierra Club has criticized the government's intervention, arguing that coal power is economically unsustainable, technologically obsolete, and poses significant health risks. Sierra Club attorney Greg Wannier emphasized the financial burden and detrimental health impacts associated with the plant’s continued operation, asserting that Consumers Energy’s plan to retire the plant is the correct course of action.
