Experiment combining #mineralcarbonation & #enhancedweathering in soil. Despite near-complete slag weathering, most base cations ended up in soil sinks (e.g. clays). Result: very low CO₂ removal (<5%)
More weathering ≠ more CO₂ removal

#EnhancedWeathering alters soil organic carbon in complex ways.
Effects are mediated by biota & soil moisture.
Robust #CDR assessments require considering organic carbon.

@globalchangebio.bsky.social: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is key for #enhancedweathering. We found negligible inorganic CO₂ removal, but considerable SOC storage potential. @boitolucilla.bsky.social @arthurvienne.bsky.social @patrickfrings.bsky.social

Current #MRV for #EnhancedWeathering focuses on bicarbonate export, but this may not capture total #CarbonRemoval, especially when soil retention is high.
We propose a cation-based MRV using solid soil samples as a more practical & reliable alternative.

New #EnhancedWeathering paper led by Emily te Pas, with @mhagens.bsky.social @elliotchang-cdr.bsky.social Rob Comans and me! TL;DR: In #ERW, weathered cations may be retained in soil. Actual #CDR in soil-based mass balance approaches must account for these cations

Application complete. This week saw @cyrilmbachu.bsky.social complete the first application of material in his #EnhancedWeathering #CCUS study.
Now we enter the monitoring phase….

##Enhancedweathering, #CCS
Today, I commenced the application of quarry fines as feedstock in my #Enhancedweathering project, a crucial phase of my research. I anticipate exciting results in the coming months when the amount of carbon dioxide that will be sequestered in the process will be quantified. #CCS
Today, the multispectral imaging of my project site where #Enhancedweathering strategy will be deployed for carbon dioxide removal was conducted #CCS. Huge thanks to @annettelokier.bsky.social and @lokier.bsky.social
A beautiful morning to do a multispectral drone survey in @cyrilmbachu.bsky.social research area. #EnhancedWeathering #CCS #CDR
