With this eighth so-called omnibus we can see the European Commission continues to prioritise the short-term interests of industry over the health and environmental concerns of citizens. Clear deregulation is being masked as simplification, but in fact these measures will have real world impacts. As one example it is proposed that polluters should have weaker obligations, and more time to meet them, when it comes to the environmental impacts of their industrial plants. And by emphasising how it will “stress test” all EU environment rules by 2029 it’s clear that far more roll-back is in the pipeline.
