Though her husband died after the birth of their 7th child, Canth wrote and published 10 plays and seven short stories. She was the first woman to receive her own flag day in Finland, on her birthday, today, which is also Finland’s day of social equality.

Finnish playwright and activist Minna Canth was born on this day in 1844. Writing about equality for women, Canth rankled religious leaders and traditionalists, who complained about her work. But Canth would not be daunted.
