Seattle No Kings- Oct 18 - Seattle Indivisible Seattle No Kings March and Rally. Oct. 18th. The largest demonstration in Seattle's history. 12:00 Assemble at the Seattle Center. March through downtown Seattle

The 3.5% rule is a concept in political science which states that when 3.5% of the population of a country protest nonviolently against a government, that government is likely to fall from power. The rule was formulated by #EricaChenoweth in 2013.

For all those hyper fixated on the 3.5% Rule, I would like to remind you of something Erica Chenoweth said "Among all maximalist nonviolent campaigns that did succeed, 83% did so without crossing the 3.5% threshold. #3point5percent #EricaChenoweth #NoKings #50501

One thing that’s especially disturbing about Trump deploying the National Guard to DC is that he’s specifically chosen to mobilize units from Red States.

This is eerily reminiscent to an authoritarian tactic discussed by #EricaChenoweth in their book “The End of People Power”.

Overthrow the Government with a Sign Not a Fight If you need your government (or president) gone, non-violence is how to do it.

Kick out a president without setting anything on fire.

Turns out, nonviolence works — better than bullets. Harvard data backs it up.

Protest smart. Call in sick. Collapse regimes.

Political scientist Erica Chenoweth and Margherita Belgioioso found that momentum, calculated as mass multiplied by velocity, is a strong predictor of whether an authoritarian leader steps down. Mass = how many people are participating; Velocity = how quickly actions are occurring over time; In other words, it’s not just about how big the movement is but it’s about how fast and sustained the actions are. Text reads: The 3.5% Rule; Cascade of Defections; Movements succeed when people in power start to defect or shift loyalties away from the regime. These people are called “Pillars of Support” or “Pillars of Power”. A cascade of defections happens most often when a movement reaches a critical mass and looks likely to win. When elites including but not limited to politicians, business leaders, media, or security forces start to believe change is inevitable, they begin shifting loyalties from the national leader. They wait to see if the movement will grow or succeed. This is called an informational cascade which is when people shift their behavior based on what they see others doing. Erica Chenoweth lexplains that as movements build legitimacy and look more likely to win, support can snowball. Movements don’t just persuade; they create visible momentum that changes what others believe is possible. It is not a shortcut. It is not a guarantee. And most movements that succeeded never reached 3.5% at all. Understanding the 3.5% Rule means understanding how people power really works. #50501 #50501Movement #EricaChenoweth 3/

How to Protest Effectively | Harvard Magazine A Harvard Kennedy School panel on today’s resistance movements

“The definition of #protest is broad. It’s not just going out in the street, raising your fist, and having a bull-horn. It’s writing and reading. #Strikes, #boycotts, #mutualaid, symbolic displays of resistance and #noncompliance —successful protest includes all of these.”

As I read the research on effective nonviolent civil resistance, I'm struggling with the realization that we need is for pranksters to take the lead with dilemma actions. Very counter-intuitive.

It's definitely counter-intuitive, but there's very good research that documents how and why nonviolent civil resistance is highly effective.

A very promising practice is "dilemma actions." We need pranksters to lead them.
