Galen Erso – ‘Star Wars’ Character Spotlight Galen Erso is the focus of this week’s _Star Wars_ Character Spotlight, the character created as the answer to the question: “Why did the Death Star have an exposed exhaust port anyway?” Played by Mads Mikkelsen (brother of Lars Mikkelsen, who plays Grand Admiral Thrawn), the actor made Galen a more emotional and complicated character than he had any right to be, a tortured scientist who thoroughly regretted his actions and was desperate to make amends and protect his family. Galen only appears in one _Star Wars_ film – _Rogue One_ – but his story has been expanded in a prequel novel for the film and the _Rogue One_ Visual Dictionary. His story is tied inextricably to the ambitious Orson Krennic, who became a high-ranking director in the Empire. His story is one of tragedy, but he played a key role in helping the Rebel Alliance destroy the Death Star. ## **Child genius** Galen Erso was born on backwater planet Grange in 53 BBY, 21 years before _The Phantom Menace_. Though Grange was an agricultural world, Galen was identified early as having a genius intellect by his teachers. He soon enrolled in the Republic Futures Programme at 13 years old, where he became fast friends with Orson Krennic, who was studying architecture in the programme. Galen’s parents soon passed away (his mother became ill and his father died in vehiclular accident) so Orson became his closest friend. Galen graduated the programme with top honors and began a career in science, with Krennic helping him get a job at Coruscant’s Institute of Applied Science. By the time Galen was 25 years old, he had established himself as a top scientist. He had been published several times and was considered an expert in crystallography and energy enhancement (both things that sound pretty useful for designing a superlaser…). While his colleagues conducted government and military research, Galen considered himself a pacifist and refused to work on anything that might be used for harm. He felt his crystal research could help him unlock a clean and renewable energy source. He had embarked on many research missions to find and study crystals that could be used as power sources, and by this point he was particularly interested in kyber crystals. It seems that he didn’t interact with the Jedi much in his research – the order probably wasn’t keen on sharing its secrets around kyber crystals and lightsabers with non-Force users – so he did many expeditions to learn more about them. It was on one of these expeditions that he met Lyra, and the two quickly fell in love. A year after they met, they married on Coruscant. ## **The Clone Wars** Only months before the Clone Wars began, Galen and Lyra relocated to the planet Wallt in the Outer Rim, where its King Chai had agreed to fund research to create an inexpensive source of energy. When the war began, King Chai was ousted in a coup and replaced by Marshal Phara, the leader of an opposing faction which received military support from the Separatists. Galen and Lyra were kept as political prisoners, with the Separatists keen to acquire Galen’s services. Galen was separated from his wife, who was pregnant with their child, but Lyra was kept in a nice quarters (either to keep Galen happy or just because she was with child). Phara offered him and his family freedom if they agreed to work for the Separatists, but Galen refused. He was allowed to see his wife when their daughter Jyn was born, and ended up growing fond of his captors, who considered the Ersos one of their own. A year into the war, he was rescued by Republic forces led by Orson Krennic, who arranged a prisoner transfer to bring Galen and his family back to the Republic. Though they were old friends, Orson’s motives were not altruistic. He sought to use Galen’s genius to further his own career in the Republic Special Weapons Group. Krennic was now overseeing construction of the Death Star and needed Galen’s expertise on kyber crystals to build its superlaser. He knew Galen would never agree to work for a military project, but hoped to make his friend feel like he owed him too much to say no. Krennic immediately ordered the bombing of Vallt to reclaim the world for the Republic, despite Galen’s fierce protestations to save lives. This obviously did little to curry the scientist’s favor, but Krennic hoped to show him the chaos of the war to persuade him that his work would help him to deliver peace and security to the galaxy. He showed Galen that the war had spread to his homeworld Grange, but Galen’s principles would not be bent even after seeing his planet ravaged. When he returned to Coruscant, his former colleagues shunned him for his reluctance to work on military projects. Some doubted his support for the Republic while others openly accused him of being a Separatist spy. Galen was unemployed at this point and not allowed to leave Coruscant; he had left one political prison for another. It was only after some encounters with Wilhuff Tarkin that the Republic’s charges against him were dropped. Despite all this, Galen still considered Orson Krennic a friend. He offered Orson the chance to join him and design a new energy facility, which of course his ambitious ally declined. Krennic in turn offered Galen a position working for a company that produced crystal arrays for worlds whose communication lines had been destroyed during the war. It was a step down for his career, but Galen seized the opportunity to get away from Coruscant. Krennic also felt that the less ambitious and interesting position would make Galen miserable, making him more amenable to joining his own team. Krennic was right as Galen frequently clashed with his superior. The planet he was stationed on would frequently be raided by Separatist forces, and on the final day of the war, a chaotic battle erupted on the surface. Galen did everything he could to protect Lyra and Jyn, but ended up being cornered by battle droids. However, just before they were about to be executed, the Separatist military was deactivated and the droids shut down. Galen was traumatized by the experience and eager to resume his work in safety, with the war now over. ## **Working for the Empire** Galen’s desire for safety meant that he was much more open to suggestion from Krennic, just as his friend had anticipated. Orson offered his friend a role on Project Celestial Power, telling him that the project aimed to help rebuild the galaxy after the war with renewable energy. In reality, Galen would be designing the superlaser for the Death Star without realizing. Galen threw himself into his work, but his wife Lyra was always suspicious of Krennic and tried to act as an angel on her husband’s shoulder, preventing him from falling completely under his friend’s influence. Krennic realized Lyra was a problem and offered her a job scouting kyber crystal caves on a remote world for six months, which she accepted. When Lyra returned, it was as if her husband had completely changed. He was so engrossed in his work – having been given limitless resources by the Empire – that he barely gave her or Jyn any attention. Galen did regret his detachment from his family, but believed his dedication to his work was for the greater good of the galaxy. Fortunately though, Galen started to distrust Orson. His friend consistently failed to come up with specific examples of what his research would be used for, which only raised Galen’s suspicions. When Lyra eventually discovered that Krennic was weaponizing his research, Galen woke up and decided enough was enough. The Ersos escaped Coruscant with the help of Saw Gerrera (he knew a mutual friend of Lyra’s). Saw, ever eager to bloody the Empire’s nose, helped them escape during a hectic holiday event and smuggled them to the backwater planet Lah’mu. The world was untouched by the Empire and Saw helped them purchase land so they could live sustainably as moisture farmers, off the Imperial radar. ## **Found by Krennic** The bulk of Galen Erso’s story from this point is familiar to those who watched _Rogue One_. He lived peacefully with his wife and daughter for several years, until eventually Orson Krennic found him on Lah’mu. His shuttle descended on their land and Orson approached the family, accompanied by death troopers. Lyra immediately hid Jyn away and signalled to Saw Gerrera to come rescue her, before heading back to Galen to confront Orson. Krennic asked Galen to come back and continue his kyber research with the Empire, though it was clear that he would be taken by force if he did not willingly accept the offer. Lyra pulled a blaster on Orson. When he gave the order for the death troopers to shoot her, she managed to get a shot away of her own, hitting Krennic in the shoulder before the troopers gunned her down. Galen was devastated by the death of his wife but agreed to come along with the Empire, reassured that Saw Gerrera would keep his daughter safe. ## **Sabotaging the Death Star** Galen went back to work for the Empire, but while he maintained the appearance of being loyal — a beaten man finding comfort in the familiarity of his work — he was anything but. He worked to build the Death Star’s superlaser and was successful in creating the greatest weapon of mass destruction the galaxy had ever seen. However, he secretly sabotaged the space station by designing a fatal flaw so tiny that the Empire would never notice. He designed an exhaust port on the surface of the station that was critical to the function of the laser. If the component inside was destroyed, it would set off a chain reaction that would destroy the whole thing. Now he just had to tell the Rebel Alliance that the weakness existed. He convinced the Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook that the Death Star was a horror and recorded a holo message for the pilot to deliver to Saw Gerrera. His message explained everything he had done and was addressed to Jyn, expressing his love for his daughter. Rook successfully delivered the message to Saw and his daughter watched it. Krennic quickly discovered that a transmission had been sent from the facility and lined up the scientists serving under Galen on the landing pad outside their research facility on Eadu. When the director threatened to execute them all, Galen spoke up and revealed that he had sent it. Unfortunately, his sacrifice meant nothing as Krennic executed his staff anyway, intending to keep Galen loyal by making it clear that further disloyalty would put his colleagues’ lives at risk. At that moment, a Republic strike force bombed the landing pad, having been given the order to strike without confirmation that Jyn’s own rebel task force was alive and nearby. Galen was caught in the explosion and mortally wounded. While Krennic escaped, Jyn Erso raced over and held her dying father in her arms. Galen was delighted to see his daughter again, and told her he had so much to tell her. Those were his final words before he passed away. ## **Legacy** Galen Erso has one of the greatest legacies in all of _Star Wars_. He helped create one of the deadliest superweapons in _Star Wars_ history, but also provided the means for Luke Skywalker to destroy it. Galen was a good man who was preyed upon for his genius. He was destined for a tragic end no matter what he did. ## **What next?** There’s not much scope for Galen Erso to pop up anywhere else in _Star Wars_ media, given that the bulk of his story has been told already. However, if he were to pop up anywhere else, it would be _Andor_ Season 2.
