In the Netherlands the Eurasian wren is called “Winterkoninkje”, which means “King of winter”. There’s a nice little story I’ve read of how it got its name. A total fantasy but who cares, I love it. When the birds heard the other animals had a king 🦁, they all agreed they wanted a king too. So a contest was arranged and the bird that could fly the highest of them all would be proclaimed king of all birds. So the robins, the tits, the geese, the swans, the gulls, all the birds had a go at it. Then the griffon vulture entered the arena. It flew higher and higher, higher than any other bird. And just as he was about to be declared the winner, a tiny bird flew off from beneath the vulture’s wing feathers where it had been hiding, to fly just a bit higher. Pandemonium broke loose with all the other birds saying the tiny bird had cheated and the griffon vulture should be declared king of the birds. But they also felt compassion and they said to the tiny bird: when we have all left for warmer weather, you can be be king for the winter season in the Netherlands. And so it came to be.
