🌍 European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) The European pied flycatcher is a small, migratory passerine. Males are strikingly black and white during breeding, with white underparts, bold wing patches, and a forehead patch. Females are duller, exhibiting brown and white plumage. They breed across most of Europe and Western Palearctic, favouring mature woodlands (especially oak) and tree cavities, readily using nest boxes. They winter in tropical West Africa. Behaviourally, they are insectivorous, darting from perches to catch flying insects. Males establish territories and can be polygynous, often attracting multiple mates. They are nocturnal migrants and their song is a distinctive, rhythmic sound. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Three subspecies are currently recognised.
