We all agree that #ExceptionalHardship should be banned, that people pleading it have had several chances to change their behaviour, & that @cyclinguk.bsky.social’s evidence shows that people let off on EH are very likely to carry in offending.
So why wasn’t it mentioned in the #RoadSafetyStrategy?
It’s worth responding to the consultation to say that & it’s disappointing there’s nothing explicit in the consultation after years of campaigning on #ExceptionalHardship by @cyclinguk.bsky.social and others.
These are people with a high reoffending rate who’ve already had several second chances.
Some positive interventions announced here, but without seeing the full #RoadSafetyStrategy it's hard to know if it goes far enough on ending #ExceptionalHardship, improving enforcement, and designing safety rather than speed into our road layouts #SaferStreets #RoadCrime
Despite @cyclinguk.bsky.social campaigning for this for years, there seems little in the #RoadSafetyStrategy about bringing an end to the #ExceptionalHardship mitigation for 'totting-up' bans - why not @heidialexander.bsky.social?
“Matthew Marston, who had previously totted up 12 points on his licence, six of which were for phone offences (escaping a ban after pleading exceptional hardship)”
Demonstrating again why #ExceptionalHardship should not be allowed @cyclinguk.bsky.social #RoadCrime
Not so sure...
The odds of being caught in the first place, coupled with the 1st lot of 6pts expiring after 3yrs, and ~50% of motorists with 12pts or more successfully plea #ExceptionalHardship and get to keep on o̶f̶f̶e̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ driving.
Just saw your vid on the other place about the plumber @cyclingmikey.bsky.social .
#ExceptionalHardship nonsense rears its ridiculous head once again 😢
Re commercial insurance; the driver's compelled to update their insurance - is there any evidence of police routinely checking up on this after?
Three years ago, @cyclinguk.bsky.social published a report on this, but nothing has changed (also interestingly, #ExceptionalHardship isn't a mitigation in drug/drink driving, so why is other negligent driving different?)
