That’s not rope trailing from the fluke of Pinnacle (BCX2046). It’s strands of kelp! Whales seem to enjoy the sensation of kelp on their skin, so it’s a safe bet that Pinnacle did this deliberately!

This massive male Steller sea lion is near the top end of the scale for his species. That’s around 1,100 kg (2,400 lb.), or the weight of a small car!

This big guy is T251, a member of the outer coast subpopulation of Bigg’s killer whales. He’s part of the T252 matriline, which regularly comes into Juan de Fuca Strait at this time of year!

A sea otter floats lazily just to the south of Race Rocks. We can tell by the size and shape of the small scar on its nose that this is not Ollie. This appears to be a new otter in town!
