#FactFocaFriday today is about ginger seals.
There aren't seals with red hair. These guys look like this because they've rolled on oxidized soil and are all dirty.Very cute potatoes.

Albino sea lions look ginger tho.

For #FactFocaFriday I'm presenting you the hooded seal.

They have the shortest weaning period of any mammal (3 to 5 days) ingesting about 45,000 calories each day. Pups are called "blue backs" because of the blue-gray fur on their backs.

They're huge! Over 13 ft long and 4,400 pounds. Enough to crush a human, so keep your distance!

It's #FactFocaFriday!
This is Tsuki, daughter of the most famous sealebrity, Yo-chan. Her white fur coat is called lanugo, and it protects cubs from the cold weather. It's not suited for swimming, so they molt it as they get more blubber and change it for the classical seal fur.

For #FactFocaFriday I wanna show you the banana pose 🍌

It's a thermoregulation trick, letting them absorb or release heat as they elevate their flippers.
Keeping your flippers away of the cold water or hot sand is a good way to feel comfortable!

Seals shed their fur coat once a year, between spring and summer. Pups do it around a week after being born.
They do it on land. They need an increased blood flow to the skin to grow new fur, and doing it in the water would cause heat loss.
It's very itchy!

Seal fat stores all the anesthesia, so they have a hard time waking up. They MUST wake up, otherwise they can die because they don't breathe when they're asleep. That's where the vets start tickling! Such an amazing job

#FactFocaFriday is here!

Seals can hold their breath for about 30 min, which gives them enough time to take a nap underwater.
They squeeze between rocks to avoid being taken away by the current. This is called a waterbed.
If they need air they just wake up and go to the surface.

Seals don't drink water, they get all the hydration they need from their food 🐟

Since frozen fish has less water, caretakers give ice and gelatin to seals in captivity to keep them healthy 🧊

It's time for #FactFocaFriday!
Seals' closer relatives are bears. We say they're sea dogs, but they're actually sea bears.

They all share a common ancestor, but dogs are more related to bears than they are to seals.

Today is #FactFocaFriday!!!

Seal milk is super fatty. With 50% fat and a lot of protein pups can gain up to 2 kg a day. It's crucial for them to develop a thick layer of blubber quickly.
Hooded seals, with 60% fat, produce the fattest known milk!

Happy Valentine for those who celebrate! Please have this week's #FactFocaFriday:

Male harbor seals seduce by chasing, neck- and flipper-biting, and embracing. When approached, females respond by growling, head-thrusting, and flipper-waving. They copulate underwater.

Very romantic ❤️

Today in Fact Foca Friday:

Some people think all seals eat penguins, but only leopard seals do (and fur seals, but they're not real seals). They also eat, fish, krill, birds and other seals.

The average seal eats fish, shellfish, squid, crustaceans, and mollusks

We're changing Fat Foca Friday for Fact Foca Friday 🦭 because I like sharing knowledge.

We'll start with the difference between pinnipeds (flipper footed). They're all cousins but they're not the same animal!
