So far this month we’ve looked at life-sized statues, small figurines, carved bas-reliefs and massive equestrian statues. The “Admiral David Glasgow Farragut Monument” – cast in bronze in 1880 and installed in Madison Square Park in 1881 – is a large public commission undertaken by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The monument honors the Civil War hero who famously said, “Damn the torpedoes… full speed ahead!” as he took Mobile Bay for the Union during the war. This was the first large-scale commission won by Saint-Gaudens, who was at the start of his very successful career as a sculptor; the money from the commission enabled him to wed his wife, Augusta Homer, to whom he had been engaged for over four years. Saint-Gaudens was born in Ireland, raised in New York City and trained in Paris. He became famous for his meticulous attention to detail (learned during his apprenticeship to a cameo maker) that gives his work its individuality and intimacy. Many of his later sculpted subjects were friends and fellow artists. He worked in both figural sculpture and in bas-relief as well as medallion design and portrait busts. His figure of Farragut is dramatically placed high up on a delicately carved granite base with a built-in bench (designed by his close friend, the architect Stanford White). The Admiral’s uniform jacket flutters as if touched by a gentle breeze; he holds his binoculars in one hand with his sword by his side, always in command, looking resolutely forward. The granite base replaced the original bluestone base (which weathered poorly) in 1934.
