Just a few feet away from a school where our children were playing—in the heart of Jersey City’s flourishing commercial district—agents of the state surrounded, intimidated, and abducted a young woman in an unmarked black car. All over our city, these kidnappings result in our immigrant community members being transported to, and suffering in, concentration camps and black sites. We should be deeply disturbed that the lack of awareness around ICE in our neighborhoods enables us to walk past this horrific event without intervening. Countless families live in fear around us and those who have already fallen victim to ICE’s terror are desperately fighting to locate and protect their loved ones. We’re eternally grateful for the Jersey City residents who happened to report this incident and mobilized in the aftermath to provide this footage. Urgently we must organize, mobilize, and continue to resist the invasion of ICE in Jersey City. Between the headlines, ICE is still here preying on our most vulnerable neighbors. We shudder to think of the countless people we may not have been able to assist simply because we couldn’t witness or intervene in what may become the worst moment of their lives. Today we weren’t able to stop ICE, but tomorrow always holds the potential for us to become stronger and more vigilant. As long as we remain isolated from each other, dependent on politicians, reliant on voting every few years, and disempowered to act: this will continue and it will get worse.
