The final paragraph about Swarzenegger is deeply *weird*. He puts in a finely tuned self parodic performance in LAH with a good handling of light comedy. He also ignores the poorly timed release opposite Jurassic Park which has nothing to do with the film itself. #empireread #feb1994

David Hepworth here missing the point of The Last Action Hero on its video release. Apart from talking mostly about what is, in the end, the final half hour of the film, he fails to notice that Slater and his villain being less interesting in the real world is the point. #empireread #feb1994

Per Kim Newman, a mix up worthy of the BBC in the late 60s. Although I don’t agree with the aside about Days of Heaven on TV. #empireread #feb1994

The section about The Age of Innocence runs across many pages with interviews with Scorsese, the etiquette coach and two pieces from press junkets with Michelle Pfeiffer and Nonny Ryder, who suffered from anxiety attacks at 22. She’s also very funny here about selling Dracula. #empireread #feb1994

Oh hold on, it wasn’t written specifically for Empire. It’s a reprint. #empireread #feb1994

As you can imagine there’s a fair amount of white saviourism in the piece reminiscent of Roland Joffe when he was interviewed about City of Joy mixed with some conscience clearing. #empireread #feb1994

The access Empire seems to have with Stone for this story is somewhat explained by the fact that later in the magazine he’s written an exclusive four page essay about why he made Heaven and Earth. #empireread #feb1994

Donald Pleasence was a POW during WW2 then starred in The Great Escape. Empire illustrates the interview with a photo of the actor dressed as Winston Churchill. #empireread #feb1994

Two star review of Tombstone, widely regarded as one of the best Westerns of all time. Oddly the version of the review on Empire’s website cuts off the final sentence about waiting for the Costner version and replaces it with something about watching it in the background. #empireread #feb1994

Nicole Kidman is referred to as Mrs Cruise in the review of Malice. Eyeroll. #empireread #feb1994

One of the few films I saw at The Hyde Park in Leeds in my first year before I moved around the corner later on as practically in there every night. One of the most exciting evenings of my life, the moment I knew I was going to be a film fan for always. #empireread #feb1994

Astonishingly people used to just write their credit card details on a slip of paper then stick it in the post. #empireread #feb1994

We actually had to wait until 2013 for Tracks starring Mia Wasikowska instead. The remake of The Ghost and Mrs Muir didn’t happen. #empireread #feb1994

Oliver Stone threatens to remake Planet of the Apes. Gus Van Sant directed a film about Harvey Milk in 2007. Quentin Tarantino disowned Natural Born Killers then Fabrer published his version of the screenplay (which was then given away as a freebie with Premiere Magazine). #empireread #feb1994

Big moment. First issue I bought myself. TV Zone was delayed that week and I wanted something to read and here we are. #empireread #feb1994
