‘Milestone’ Evidence for Anyons, a Third Kingdom of Particles
Anyons don’t fit into either of the two known particle kingdoms. To find them, physicists had to erase the third dimension.

Fermions are subatomic particles with half-integer spin that follow Fermi-Dirac statistics. They are the building blocks of matter in the Standard Model, which classifies all fundamental particles as either fermions or bosons.

#KnowledgeByte: "Impossible particles," also referred to as "#Paraparticles," are theoretical particles that would not fit into the current classification of fundamental particles as either #Fermions or #Bosons.

A simple linear framework reproduces all known fermion masses and predicts a fourth charged lepton (~8.6 MeV). A 2024 experiment reported a lepton-like state (the "anomalon") at 8.5 +/- 2.5 MeV, consistent with this prediction.

4/8 There's also a key distinction between particle types:
Fermions: "matter" particles like protons and electrons that comprise everything
Bosons: "carrier" particles like photons that deliver forces between fermions
And fundamental vs non-fundamental particles.

A comparison of Bose-Einstein condensate (bosons) and fermionic clouds (fermions) of lithium isotopes at decreasing temperatures (810 nK, 510 nK, 240 nK). The bosons clump together, while the fermions maintain distance, demonstrating the Pauli Exclusion Principle.

#DidYouKnow: #Anyons are exotic quasiparticles that exist only in two-dimensional systems and exhibit unusual exchange statistics, unlike #Bosons or #Fermions.
Their unique properties make them promising candidates for use in topological quantum computers.

A pretty cool new discovery in physics of semi-Dirac Fermions, they are being called quasiparticles that have directional mass but only in a certain direction otherwise they behave as if they have no mass. #Science #Fermions #Tech #Discovery #Magnets
changing bosons into fermions and back can create work.
In this design, particles step through changes in their quantum character, and that shifting property runs the engine.

#Anyons, as they’re known, don’t behave like either #fermions or #bosons; instead, their behavior is somewhere in the middle.
I have published a new blog entry about #fermions at http://bit.ly/diKry
