Fic snippet from lupizora's kaishin fic, Blindsided.

[It had started as a game of wits, a different challenge than the race to identify murderers and other violent crooks.

He had thought, perhaps out of foolishness, that the boundaries separating them had crumbled over time. That he had finally managed to see the person behind the mask, communicate with him, and maybe even put his trust in him.]

Akutagawa sensed there was more to the story, due to the way Atsushi stumbled over the words, and how his posture had gone suddenly stiff and awkward. He scoffed. "I see. So you drove her away with your insipid blathering."
At that, Atsushi's gaze snapped towards him again.
In the lamplight, his golden eyes seemed to flash with anger. "Well, at least I was trying to be friendly," he said sharply, "and I'm not just cruel to everyone I meet like you are."
The insult stuck like barbs under Akutagawa's skin, and his hands curled into fists. Atsushi squared his shoulders, his brows knitting furiously together.
Akutagawa could practically feel the growing tension crackling in the air between them, like a storm brewing, a stark juxtaposition to their serene surroundings.
But just when he thought they might start exchanging blows, Atsushi's rigid stance began to fade. The fire died in his eyes, and he looked down towards the cobblestones with a defeated sigh.
"I'm sorry," he said. "To be perfectly honest, I think you're right. I believe I insulted her. I'm not good at..." He trailed off with a wince, as if something had physically pained him. He gestured vaguely back towards the mansion, where the sound of music and laughter trickled out of the open doors.
Akutagawa blinked, astounded. Had Atsushi just... apologized to him? His burning fury began to ebb, as reluctant as he was to let it go. His fingers slowly uncurled. An uncomfortable feeling curled in his stomach as he observed Atsushi's sudden forlorn expression. It felt dangerously close to sympathy.

"Where is Chuuya taking me? Am I being kidnapped?"
"No, you idiot. We're going after them."
Dazai gasped in mock incredulity. "Chuuya! Are you suggesting we spy on them?"
"What? No!" Chuuya sputtered. "We're not spying on them, just watching them without their knowledge."
He realized how the words sounded as soon as he said them, and inwardly cringed. He dared a glance at Dazai, who was barely holding back an amused smile. Chuuya wanted to punch it off his face.
Instead, he just released a frustrated grunt and tugged harder on Dazai's sleeve, steering him towards the back doors.
As they stumbled haphazardly through the crowd, Chuuya was distantly aware of all the pairs of eyes trailing after them. Now that he thought about it, they probably should have made their exit more subtly. There was a flicker of panic at the back of his mind, thinking up all the elaborate rumors that might stem from this-the sight of him and Dazai drunkenly running out into the gardens together, Chuuya grasping Dazai by the wrist. Would everyone think they were storming outside to duel each other? Or worse, would they think...
Chuuya hastily dismissed the thought and let go of Dazai's sleeve. His face burned, and he tried to convince himself it was from exertion and nothing else. In any case, he hoped Dazai hadn't noticed it in the dimness.

Kaoru's pulse slows a little. He's strangely relieved, since this is somehow far easier to answer than what he thought Kojiro might be asking. "You want to know if I was ever in love with him," he says. A statement rather than a question.
Kojiro's eyes widen a fraction. But then, after a moment, he nods. There's a subtle bob in his throat.
Kaoru sighs, letting his head rest back against the wall again. "I wasn't," he says. He's had the answer prepared for a long time. He's honestly surprised Kojiro didn't ask him sooner.
Kojiro goes rigid, as if the words sent a jolt through him. "You weren't?"
"No. Does that surprise you?"
"Well... I don't know. Kinda." Kojiro extracts his hand from Kaoru's and rubs the side of his neck. "I just always thought..." He seems embarrassed all of a sudden, avoiding Kaoru's gaze.
Kaoru huffs a breathless noise. Maybe he's laughing-he's not really sure. "I can't really blame you for that," he says. "I was so infatuated with him, back then. He made me feel so... noticed. Special.
At the time, I thought that was love. That he loved me, that he loved all of us."
His ribs ache. He presses a hand to his side and winces.
"But he didn't," he goes on. "As hard as it is to accept, I don't think he ever loved any of us. Or at least, what he considered to be love was really just control. I realize that, now."

But the cat didn't seem to notice him. As it emerged into the faint light, crouching low to the ground, its gaze was fixed entirely on Akutagawa.
"Wh-Why is it looking at me like that?" Akutagawa said. He remained frozen, like he feared the cat was a demonic beast that would maul him if he made a single wrong move.
Atsushi had felt briefly slighted that the cat had ignored him entirely-but it was quickly drowned out by amusement as he took in the terrified look on Akutagawa's face. He stifled a laugh against the back of his hand.
"Just hold still," he said. "It's not like it's going to attack you or anything."
Akutagawa did not seem to believe that. He remained tense, as if preparing himself for a painful blow, as the cat crept closer and closer to him. Now that it had emerged into the light, Atsushi could see it had faint gray streaks lining its back and tail, like a tiger's stripes.
The cat was only inches away from Akutagawa now, and it tilted its head in curiosity. In the stillness, Atsushi thought he could hear a faint rumbling noise emanating from the small creature.
Was it... purring? Then, with a small chirping sound, it leapt.
Akutagawa let out a choked, surprised noise. He nearly fell backwards as he tried to struggle away, but the cat had already jumped onto his lap and was now attempting to dive inside his wide yukata sleeve.

Slowly, without a word, he stretches out his hand.
He lets it hover there in the narrow space between them, palm facing upward. He won't look Kojiro in the eye. But he feels Kojiro's shoulder stiffen against his, sees how Kojiro looks down and stares at Kaoru's hand like he has no idea what it is.
Then, at last, there's a gentle pressure against his palm. Kojiro's fingers intertwine with his, familiar and warm and calloused.
Neither of them speaks. Kaoru stares at the wall across from his bed. He just breathes, and clings to the grounding sensation of Kojiro's hand in his.
After a few minutes, the phantom images of the nightmare grow foggy, and the trembling in his body dies down to stillness.
Kojiro shifts next to him, his arm jostling against Kaoru's. "You okay?"
Kaoru takes another breath. His chest doesn't hurt so much, now. "Yes," he says quietly. He's not sure if it's true, but he's at least better than he was before.

"I have an idea!" Dazai cut in. He had somehow appeared between the two of them, and put a hand on each of their shoulders. "Why don't you both
go?"
Akutagawa immediately saw his own reluctance reflected on Atsushi's face.
"That's..." Akutagawa cleared his throat, struggling to suppress the cough he could feel rising up from his lungs. "I don't think that will be necessary."
"Perhaps not," Dazai said, "but it will make it a bit easier, don't you think? That way one person doesn't have to carry food for all of us."
"This is ridiculous," said Chuuya. "In that case, why don't we all just—"
Dazai whirled around to slap a hand over Chuuya's mouth. "Oh, Chuuya! Wasn't there that thing over there you wanted to see?"
Chuuya went cross-eyed staring at Dazai's hand over his mouth, before he hastily smacked it away.
His face had started to turn the same burgundy color as the fan he was holding. "Hah? What are you—"
Dazai grabbed him by the collar, spun him around, and started to push him down the street. He threw a smile over his shoulder at Akutagawa and Atsushi. "We won't be far!" he called. "Come find us after you've gotten the food!"

"Yes, well, about that..." Chuuya snuck a glance out the window, and the dark clouds crowding the sky. "Are you sure it was a good idea to send Akutagawa and Atsushi out on a walk by themselves?"
Dazai shrugged. "Why would it not be?"
He couldn't be serious. Then again... this was Dazai, so what had Chuuya expected? "I don't know," Chuuya said, "maybe because you intentionally turned them against each other? They could be strangling each other on the beach right now."
"Ah, Chuuya." Dazai let out an exasperated sigh.
"You worry too much. Careful, or you'll give yourself wrinkles, and I don't think you could afford to become any uglier."
He poked Chuuya in the forehead, and Chuuya swatted his hand away.
"I'm serious, you stupid mackerel."
"As am I, my little parasitic slug."

Suddenly, coldness washed over him. Water.
They'd tumbled past the shoreline and into the surf.
Akutagawa's forearm pressed forcefully down against Atsushi's chest. He loomed above Atsushi with a murderous gleam to his eyes, breathing raggedly, a thin cut along his cheekbone oozing blood.
Panic set into Atsushi's bones. Akutagawa wasn't actually going to drown him, was he? But just as a surge of sea water spilled around them, Akutagawa knotted his hand in the front of Atsushi's shirt and yanked him upright. Atsushi sputtered, gasping for breath and blinking cold droplets from his eyes.
He was met with the sight of Akutagawa's face hovering mere inches from his. His damp eyelashes clung together, and dark strands of his hair were plastered to his forehead and the sides of his face. There was an almost feverish intensity to the way he glared at Atsushi, and it made something heated stir to life in Atsushi's chest.
Something the likes of which he'd never felt before.
Maybe this was what it felt like to truly, deeply hate someone with every fiber of his being.

Something tightened in Akutagawa's chest. He spared another look in Atsushi's direction, to find his own hesitation and dread reflected in the man-tiger's face. Apparently he was no more thrilled about this idea than Akutagawa was. But if it would make Dazai that happy just for the two of them to take a brief walk together...
"Fine," Akutagawa said through gritted teeth. Then, when Chuuya glared at him, he heaved a sigh and added, "What I meant to say is... if it would please Dazai-san, I will go."
He snapped his attention towards Atsushi, trying to convey as much as he could through his expression that he was doing this against his will.
The feeling was mutual, he gathered, through the flicker of ire in Atsushi's strange golden eyes.
"Wonderful!" Dazai said, clapping his hands together. "This will give Chuuya and I some time to catch up with each other as well."
Chuuya's face immediately fell and started to turn pale, like he just realized he'd fallen into a horrible trap. Well, that was his comeuppance for forcing Akutagawa into this.

Akutagawa realized how shallow his breathing had gone, and he fought to get himself under control.
Inhale. Exhale. The last thing he wanted to do was have a debilitating coughing fit.
Chuuya rubbed a hand against the back of his neck. "Listen," he said. "I didn't mean to surprise you with this, but—"
"Chuuyaaa!" a voice sang out from the front door.
Akutagawa went rigid, feeling as if lightning had crawled up his spine. At the same time, Chuuya's guilty look vanished and was replaced instantly with annoyance. "Ah, perfect," he muttered, rolling his eyes. "Excellent timing."
"How rude of Chuuya not to welcome me in." Dazai tutted as he approached them from across the foyer. A grin lit up his face. The very sight of it made Akutagawa feel ill.
To make matters worse, Dazai's student accompanied him, lurking several paces behind.
Atsushi-or the man-tiger, as Akutagawa had dubbed him, due to those strangely colored eyes of his. Those eyes now turned towards Akutagawa and widened with horror, and Atsushi stopped in his tracks.
"Akutagawa-kun!" Dazai exclaimed, drawing Akutagawa's attention again. "I take from your murderous expression that you did not know I would be here-although, then again, I suppose your face always looks like that."

"Listen," Akutagawa hissed, and the wrath in his tone crawled like spiders up Atsushi's spine. "I don't know who you think you are, but you're not special.
Dazai-san will discard you the moment you disappoint him."
Atsushi was struck speechless. Discard you. The words were a cold blade, striking him to the very core. Images flashed through his mind of a shadowy figure looming over him-the orphanage headmaster. The venomous bite of his words, telling Atsushi he was nothing, that he deserved to starve in the streets. The iron gates closing on him.
The frigid air seeping through his threadbare clothes...
But, no. He would not be cast out that way again.
Dazai would never do that to him.
.. Would he?
Atsushi shook his head. He met Akutagawa's challenging stare with a defiant one of his own. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. It came out raspier, weaker than he'd hoped it would.
He swallowed hard. "Dazai-san isn't like that."
That didn't seem to be the reaction Akutagawa had anticipated. For a moment, the rage faded from his expression. His eyebrows lifted. Some of the tension fell from his posture.
Then, just as quickly, the wall went up again. His face went stony, almost eerily calm, and he huffed a bitter laugh.
"You don't know him like I do," was all he said at last.

Their introduction earlier had instilled an unsettling, cold feeling in Atsushi's veins. He wasn't sure what social atrocity he'd accidentally committed, but Akutagawa had looked at him with such loathing that it had felt like being scalded by burning metal—a sensation which Atsushi was unfortunately familiar with. The same animosity remained on Akutagawa's scowling face now, burning in the depths of his gray eyes and sending an uncomfortable prickle up the back of Atsushi's neck.
He hesitated, unsure how to respond to the single cold word Akutagawa had uttered. Perhaps there'd been some kind of misunderstanding. Was it possible Akutagawa had confused him with someone else? Someone he apparently wanted to kill very badly?

Felix snapped back to his senses, breathing raggedly and vision slipping in and out of focus. He desperately tried to force himself back into the drift, but it was like trying to grasp at smoke—at something that was evaporating before his eyes.
But, no, Glenn still had to be there. He had to be...
A new wave of debilitating pain crashed into Felix.
But this one was different from the first. This was like the weight of the entire world had crashed upon his shoulders at once, and the strain of bearing it would have brought him to his knees if his limbs weren't attached to the jaeger's controls. His skull felt like it was about to split open from the enormous pressure building inside of it-and he realized, distantly, what it was.
He was drifting alone.
The kaiju reared up in front of Aegis's ruined hull, jaws opening in a thunderous roar. Felix could barely think past the agony tearing him apart, past the crushing weight bearing down on him. His lungs felt like they were being flattened, yet he somehow managed an enraged cry as he strained to lift his arm. Each movement took so much effort that it made his vision blacken at the edges—but he couldn't give up. Not now. Dimitri and Dedue were still out there. Glenn was still out there—he had to be, Felix thought frantically, ignoring the hollow feeling deep in his chest telling him otherwise.
With the last of his strength, he charged up the blaster. The kaiju reared its large head back, about to strike. The growing blaze of Aegis's weapon filled Felix's vision-brighter and brighter, until it drowned out everything else.

Sylvain looks up, scanning dizzily for any sign of aid—a healer, a saint descending from the heavens, anything. All he sees are swinging swords, falling bodies, and the lingering flames of the spell he cast. He holds up his free hand and tries to summon his healing magic, but the effort makes stars burst in his vision. He's too exhausted, too weak, and has used up too much of his power; summoning Bolganone just now probably made it even worse. The white glow sputters uselessly and dies at his fingertips.
No. This can't be happening. Maybe he can carry Felix down the hill, get Felix onto his horse... He doesn't know where he'd go, or if all that jostling around might worsen Felix's injuries, but—
"Sylvain."
Sylvain snaps out of it. Felix is looking up at him, blearily, eyelids fluttering like he can barely keep them open.
"Don't," Felix rasps, as if reading Sylvain's thoughts. "It's... too late."

They stepped through the doorway into the parlor, and it was like crossing the threshold into a different world. One that Akutagawa felt entirely alien in, and wished he could leave immediately.
The volume of chatter and laughter increased, and the relentless piano music grated on his ears. The gaudy colors of numerous dresses and suits assaulted his eyes, and he blinked as if being blinded by the sun.
Gin stopped suddenly, only a few steps into the room. Akutagawa looked at her questioningly, to see that the excitement had vanished from her face. Anxiety pinched her brow. She looked at Akutagawa with a panicked expression, then pointed at her throat.
"What is it?" said Akutagawa. "You... don't think you'll be able to talk to her?"
Gin nodded.
Akutagawa glanced at Higuchi, who was still absorbed in her reading and still had taken no notice of them.
He turned back to his sister. "I... suppose I can do the initial talking," he said. The offer caused him almost physical pain. He did not consider verbal communication one of his strong suits, and the matter was made much worse by his unpredictable coughing fits. "Otherwise, I'm sure you and she can figure out some other means of communicating."
There was still a glimmer of anxiety in Gin's eyes, but she squared her shoulders and nodded. Once again, they moved forward together.
