The latest #PetSematary is efficiently put together. The family are given just enough characterisation for us to be invested. I wish that it took more liberties with the interpretation, or opted for a more striking aesthetic. I feel this will be forgotten quickly. #Film2019
#TheLEGOMovie2 is not as smart or inventive as the original. The animation is wonderful though, and the film zips along at a fast past. The voice cast are great too. #Film2019
I thought #CaptainMarvel was disappointing. Lazy writing; two dimensional characters; boring action set pieces; looked ugly. #Film2019
#Piercing surprised me. Far more unsettling than I was expecting. Some choices seemed too heavy handed and I'm not sure the ending works entirely. Yet still, there is some pretty uncomfortable stuff here, both in the service of questioning the audience, and provoking. #Film2019
Brady Corbet’s #VoxLux, while not being wholly successful (veering tonally between too arch or too affected at times), has plenty of standout moments and challenging ideas that make it a gripping watch. #Film2019
#HighFlyingBird is interesting; the dialogue is dense & character motivations are not always clear. The subject matter is incredibly specific though. I could never fully understand the sporting & business implications, which made for a frustrating viewing experience. #Film2019
#MaryPoppinsReturns still contains the same class blindness and quaint, nauseating idea of britishness that made the original so problematic for me. In fact, this latest incarnation amplifies those problems because they've merely repackaged the exact same story. #Film2019
#IfBealeStreetCouldTalk is a beautiful picture. Barry Jenkins’ use of colour here is a sight to behold; the use of browns, oranges and greens are so evocative of period and place.
It is such an impressive adaptation as well, which possesses a real quiet anger.

'Velvet Buzzsaw' was enjoyable in places. Yet, the drift into horror is less successful. I felt these moments were often devoid of atmosphere or anything remotely unsettling - the filmmaking turned too broad, dare I say far too cheesy. #Film2019
#Vice features some committed performances; It also features some entertaining narrative & aesthetic choices. Yet, it all felt too loose & unfocussed for me. The writing needed to be sharper, likewise the editing. Political satire is tricky and this fell short for me. #Film2019
Big fan of Jonah Hill’s #Mid90s; it’s a very accomplished debut. It features some excellent, naturalistic performances, and it captures a culture and an ethos very well. #Film2019
