@kjaycee.bsky.social GRIZZLY WAS... WELL, JOE BOB WAS RIGHT TO LABEL IT A 'JAWS RIPOFF' FOR SURE!
I THINK IF IT LEANED HARDER INTO ITS EXPLOITATION SENSIBILITIES (SILLY LEVELS OF GORE, ESPECIALLY DUMB HUMANS, ETC) GRIZZLY WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. STILL! DEFINITELY HORROR #FILM24 #61FILMSOFHALLOWEEN
TECH DALEK SELECTED 1976'S 'GRIZZLY' TO BE #FILM24 OF #61FILMSOFTHANKSGIVING! I HAD BEEN INTERESTED IN SEEING THIS MOVIE EVER SINCE JOE BOB PROCLAIMED IT PERHAPS BEST OF THE JAWS RIPOFF ANIMAL ATTACK MOVIES. AND RIGHT FROM THE FIRST...GRISLY... MAULING OF CAMPERS WITH ARMS FLYING, YOU CAN SEE WHY!
werewolves in the head rather than any of that silver bullet nonsense.

place before setting off to take part in the inevitable clinical trial of moon block that goes awry. Everything from that point on proceeds exactly as you would expect. Happily, the werewolf lore here seems to allow for just shotgunning

who is on a team of scientists trying to develop 'moon block' to stop the, umm, extra-super moon rays of supermoons from triggering the rare genetic anomaly that turns people into werewolves. Yeah. Anyway, it's Supermoon night and our Frank helps fortify his dead best mate's family's

Werewolves (Stephen C Miller, 2024)
High concept big-dumb-actioner of the kind they rarely make nowadays for reasons that are apparent from the get-go. Frank Grillo stars as some kind of geneticist (and part time double-hard bastard)
#Film24 [117]
Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher (who plays the younger version of Juliet Lewis on Yellowjackets and also sings the end credits cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door). You will never play Monopoly, or hear Radiohead's Creep, in quite the same way again.

Two Mormon missionaries are welcomed by the disarmingly affable Mr Reed only to discover they are trapped in his home and subject to his rather unusual method of philosophical investigation. A clever, cerebral horror flick that stays watchable and engaging thanks to fine work by Grant,
#Film24 [115]
Heretic (Scott Beck & Bryan Woods, 2024)
Hugh Grant takes his charming but awkward romcom persona and gives it a half-turn to the left to create probably his best performance (narrowly edging out his turn in Paddington 2).
#Film24 [114]
The plot (refugee steals from Triads and flees to Kowloon. Found family tropes ensue, also fighting) hinges on a big coincidence but the cast sell it really well and it manages to pack an emotional punch. Sammo Hung is still fearsome in this despite being 70 at time of filming.
#Film24 [113]
Martial arts mayhem of a high order as wire-fu meets urban grimdark within Hong Kong's Kowloon Walled City. The film is set in 1984, shortly before the enclave was demolished but the maze of concrete and cabling depicted here feels very real and must have cost a fortune to stage.

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (Soi Cheang, 2024)
It is a testament to the inherent *bonkersness* of this film that at one point you find yourself thinking, "Well, of COURSE they would soundtrack this montage segment with an electric guitar cover of Walking In The Air."

Blitz is not very good. Should/Could have been so much better #film24 #barrynorman
NEW THRILL: review of ELEVATION in my #Film24 thread
bsky.app/profile/stua...
Mackie does his serious frowny-face and he and Baccarin are decent despite everything. That said, 'unkillable alien' has been done now, guys. I can name maybe four better versions of this film and three of them have Emily Blunt in and therefore represent better value for money.
#Film24 [110]
forced to venture down from their mountaintop to grab vital medical supplies and - just maybe - discover the One Weird Trick that makes Reapers explode in a cloud of CGI. It's all competently done barring a few wonky practical effects (that $18m budget did NOT stretch very far)
#Film24 [109]
Elevation (George Nolfi, 2024)
A High Place, basically. Instead of A Quiet Place's unshootable, sound-detecting monsters, Elevation's everything-proof 'Reapers' are bafflingly unable to go more that 8000 feet about sea level. Stoic Anthony Mackie and boffin Morena Baccarin are

Gladiator 2. Good, but not as good as Gladiator #Film24
NEW THRILL: review of Smile 2 on my #Film24 megathread bsky.app/profile/stua...
The film still relies heavily on jump scares but there are a couple of incredible sequences here, including and *incredibly* creepy one with a group of dancers that plays like a mash-up of DW's Weeping Angels with Suspiria. One of the best in a very strong year for horror.
#Film24 [107]
with enough demons of her own for a dozen films. Naomi Scott is just fantastic in this. An utterly believable performance that goes well beyond the standard Scream Queen range and she handles the choreography with aplomb.
#Film24 [106]
Smile 2 (Parker Finn, 2024)
Barnstorming sequel to 2022's Smile that extrapolates and fine-tunes the premise (demonic entity that latches onto a victim and sends them mad until they kill themselves in front of the next victim) by making the unlucky witness a Britney-ish pop starlet

Just been to see Blitz. It's very well done. 4* #Film24
apres les olympics ou quelque chose et aussi les attemptes de humour et les CGI effects speciale-ish. Any bien? Comme ci, comme ça.

Under Paris (Xavier Gans, 2024)
Ou'est les sharks? Les sharks est SOUS Paris! Zut alors! Berenice Bejo (Le fit one, depuis The Artist) c'est l'expert des sharks ou quelque chose. Les sharks terrorise Paris, avec beaucoup la sang et corruption political
#Film24 [103]
The film takes place in a well-trodden world of fixers and gangsters as Clooney & Pitt butt heads when both are hired to be The One Guy Who Can Fix This Mess. Good fun and didn't deserve the drubbing it received IMHO.
#Film24 [102]
Wolfs (John Watts, 2024)
This was fine, really. Completely coasts on the charisma of Clooney & Pitt, but they can more than bear the load and there are a couple of great supporting roles from Amy Ryan and Austin Abrams that combine to overcome the so-so script.

A few more film reviews on my #Film24 megathread - Blink Twice, In A Violent Nature, Don't Move and The Three Musketeers: D'Artangan bsky.app/profile/stua...
even through the beard and long hair. Visually, the film owes a lot to the 2001 Cassel vehicle Brotherhood Of The Wolf with lashings of grime and torchlight as well as brilliantly staged action sequences. Part 2, "Milady," is out and I will get to that at some point too.
#Film24 [100]
and a staged murder. Eva Green is great as Milady Dewinter (the sexy cat one if, like me, your main frame of reference is Dogtanian & the Three Muskehounds) and Vincent Cassel (Athos) continues to look a lot like Tricky Dicky from Eastenders
