Though these pests aren't harmful they can be a nuisance, especially when they swarm in large numbers. Our pest control technician Steve dealt with this swarm at a property recently.

On July 10, 2025 I met a swarm of flying ants or alates at the edge of a forest in Southwest Germany.
Alates aren't a species of their own, they're mature ants that develop wings and leave the colony to look for mates and found new ant colonies elsewhere.

It must be flying ant day as my smart watch is telling me it's raining, yet it's clear twilight skies and it's still 27c at 10pm. Apparently swarms of flying ants can sometimes trick weather radars into thinking it's raining #flyingantday

Daddy Wiggle just came in from the garden asking who'd shut the upper and lower star gates (they have two levels).
Little Wiggle said, "I shut them because I wanted to stop the flying ants coming closer to the house".
She worked it out eventually. 😂
