📣Introducing…🥁🥁 “Folklore Friday” at the EUF Centre for Irish Studies!!!
At least one Friday every month, we will spotlight a legendary figure or story from Irish Folklore. This month, we’re featuring Cailleach Bhéarra! 😍 #folklorefriday #irishfolklore #IrishStudies
…You are that shrewd and knavish sprite
Call’d Robin Goodfellow. Are not you he
That frights the maidens of the villagery?
Those that Hobgoblin call you, and sweet Puck,
You do their work, and they shall have good luck.
Are not you he?

A drawing of El Sombrerón who's face is hidden under his wide brim hat
For #folklorefriday let’s talk about El Sombrerón.
He is a dwarfish man from Guatemalan folklore.
2/2 She is known to assail people working at noon, causing heatstrokes, neck aches, and sometimes even madness. She can also show kindness to skilled people and help them find jewels and gold, but can also bring bad luck or death if her conditions are not met. #FolkloreFriday
I adore this painting, "Lady Midday" (c. 2017) by Sergei Demidov. #Poludnitsa is a noon demon in Slavic folklore who appears in fields during the hottest part of the day. She is typically pictured as a young woman dressed in white 1/2 #FolkloreFriday
Meet El Duende: The forest-dweller of Central America. 🎩
Small in stature but huge in influence, these goblin-like spirits are staples of Costa Rican and Panamanian culture. They represent the bridge between the domestic home and the wild unknown.

The Belalp Hexe is a Swiss ski race where competitors dress up as witches to honour the legend of a local woman burned for witchcraft 500 years ago. #PhantomsFriday #FolkloreFriday
A doll of a Tallemaja with blond hair, blue eyes, bovine tail, wearing a green dress.
Today's #folklorefriday is going to be a short one.
The Tallemaja is from Swedish folklore. She is considered to be a type of troll, even though she appears as human, except for her cow-like tail.

Plate 46 William Blake, Nebuchadnezzar, 1795-about 1805
I was thinking about this etching by Blake of Nebuchadnezzar. Our new mad king torments us all. Blake thought the appearance of such a man would signal a moral and political collapse. And then I looked it up and there’s a copy in Minneapolis Institute of Art. #FolkloreFriday #folklore #mythology
In 1925, there was a ghost in den Ransel in a hotel in Amstenrade, Netherlands who pulled the toes of anyone who would sleep in a very specific hotel room.
Apparently, the ghost was guarding his money because once it was stolen, he left the hotel for good.

Okay, I am cheating for this week’s #folklorefriday as this not a snake.
How could I pass on telling you about a Death Worm?
Also, in my defense both creatures are long, wiggly, and crawl on the ground.
Seems relevant to share this #FolkloreFriday again.
The Werewolf trials of Bedburg amply demonstrate abuses of power, unjust persecution, and gaslighting to fit a false narrative.
Remember, if you know a werewolf, no you f*cking don’t.

I have all of the old #folklorefriday posts on my Patreon in a lovely collection called Folklore is you want to not have to scroll to find them.
And of course they're free. I'm not an evil paywall goblin.

Mbói Tu’i, as a giant snake with a bird head, rainbow feathers and scales
My post surgery butt has made it down a flight of stairs to my computer, so we can do #folklorefriday
The Guarani people have Mbói Tu’i, a monster with the body of a serpent, the head of a parrot, and a red forked tongue. Some depictions give Mbói Tu’i tiny lizard front legs.
So, I may have decided to make this month Giant Snake Monster month.
Why?
Because snakes are cool.
This #folklorefriday we’ll be talking about the El Culebrón from Chile.
A depicting of a hairy Kapre, holding a cigar and smiling while mounted over a tree
Kapre — the smoking giant of Filipino folklore.
A towering figure, 2–3 meters tall, dark‑skinned and hairy, with glowing eyes and an eternal cigar. #Kapre #FilipinoFolklore #MythicalCreatures #Bestiary #FolkloreFriday #MonstersandMyths #Mindouttabox
an African savanna with large boulders, shrubs, grass, and hills
For this #folklorefriday, we’re heading to the Richtersveld, South Africa. This national park is home to a creature from African folklore called the Grootslang.
A photograph of the upper section of an ancient, weathered stone Celtic High Cross against a cloudy, white sky. The cross features the traditional ring connecting the arms and is densely carved with intricate relief details, including Celtic knotwork and a heart in the center. The stone is grey and textured with lichen. The photo was taken at the ruins of Ballynafagh Church in Ireland.
This high cross is still standing guard over the ruins of Ballynafagh Church, sitting quietly in the middle of a farmer's field in County Kildare. 🇮🇪

simple inked illustration of Perchta in Alpine folk dress, bloody sickle and drop spindles hanging from her waist, dancing with a large demon companion with 4 horns, bushy mane, and belt adorned with big bells
It’s the new year, so all the Yule spirits have moved on.
Right?
Nope.
This #folklorefriday you still run the risk of being visited by Frau Perchta.
(This image of Perchta is by @breebird33.bsky.social, who creates gorgeous art & deserves a follow)
A pool on a moorland ridge. It is reflecting the luminous but cloudy sky above. It is surrounded by large gritstone outcrops and boulders.
Doxey Pool, on The Roaches in Staffordshire, is said to be the home of Jenny Greenteeth, who lurks below the surface and drags unsuspecting passers-by, particularly children, to a watery grave.

A parade of ghost walking through a moonlit forest.
We’re still lingering in Europe near the Alps for this #folklorefriday, as we cover The Night Folk. They are also referred to as The Night Throng, Death Throng, and Death Folk. Wearing black robes and shrouds, this solemn procession of lost souls makes their way across the land.
I've really enjoyed #FolkyFriday and have always tried to make at least one of my #PhantomsFriday posts tie in with each week's theme. I'm sad to see it go but congratulate the Three Ravens on their sterling work. We only have ghostlore locked down, so we need a #FolkloreFriday hero to step up!

Saint Nicholas and Knecht Ruprecht walking down a road with two alpacas.
It’s another cold night, with the threat of snow looming. Knecht Ruprecht is the Yule spirit visiting us this #folklorefriday from Germany and the Alps. He often wears a dark robe with a pointed hood and fur trim, has a bushy beard, carries a large sack, and a switch.
