Eleanor Bumpers was a sixty six year old Black grandmother, disabled, mentally ill, struggling to survive in her New York City AFP apartment. She was four months behind on her rent, ninety eight dollars and sixty - five cents short. And for that the city decided that she needed to be evicted. But Eleanor wasn't a threat. She wasn't violent, She was sick. She needed help. Instead, they sent the police. A team of MIT officers armed with shields, batons, guns, showed up at her door. Eleanor terrified, trying to defend herself with a kitchen knife, not an A. K. Forty seven, a kitchen knife held by a sixty six year old woman who could barely walk. Instead of backing off instead of de - escalating, an officer pulled out a shotgun, not a taser, not a baton, a shotgun. And they blew her across the room. One blast ripped through her chest, tearing her body apart over a rent bill less than one hundred dollars. And how did the system respond ? The officer who unaligned her was charged with second degree manslaughter, but he was acquitted. Walked free. Eleanor Bumpers name was reduced to a footnote In the city's long bloody history of police violence. Because in America, your life is negotiable when you're black and poor, and being mentally ill doesn't make you vulnerable Here, It makes you a target. Eleanor Bumpers wasn't dangerous. She was disposable, and they proved it. Not just when they pulled the trigger, but when they let her killer walk free and called a justice. They tell us to trust the system.
