Two dead, 559 arrested in France clashes after PSG Champions League win Two people died and hundreds were arrested in France overnight as football fans celebrated Paris Saint-Germain’s stunning UEFA Champions League final victory, the ministry of the interior says. The epicentre of the euphoria was in Paris, which was a theatre of car horns, cheers, singing in the streets and fireworks throughout the night following PSG’s 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan in Munich. The interior ministry on Sunday said 491 people were arrested in the capital after crowds converged on the Champs-Elysees avenue and clashes broke out with officers. Across France, a total of 559 people were arrested, it added. The authorities reported two deaths amid celebrations. A man riding a scooter in Paris died after being hit by a car in the city’s southern 15th arrondissement, located about 2km from the Champs-Elysees. In the southwestern town of Dax, a 17-year-old was fatally stabbed at a gathering feting the PSG victory, prosecutors say. His death occurred shortly after the match and “during the celebrations”, but the prosecutor’s office say it did not know whether it was related to the Champions League final. It added that the perpetrator was “on the run”. The PSG team were to hold a victory parade on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday, with tens of thousands of supporters expected to gather to catch a glimpse of their returning heroes. Overnight, though, AFP journalists saw police on the famed thoroughfare using water cannons to stop a crowd reaching the Arc de Triomphe that sits at the top of the Champs-Elysees. “Troublemakers on the Champs-Elysees were looking to create incidents and repeatedly came into contact with police by throwing large fireworks and other objects,” the police say in a statement. Elsewhere, police say a car careered into fans celebrating PSG’s win in Grenoble in southeastern France, leaving four people injured, two of them seriously. All of those hurt were from the same family, the police say. The driver handed himself in to the police and was placed under arrest. A source close to the investigation says it was believed the driver had not acted intentionally. The public prosecutor’s office say the driver had tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The majority of fans celebrated peacefully, but police in Paris say scuffles broke out near the Champs-Elysees avenue, and around PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where 48 000 people had watched the 5-0 win on giant screens. Most of those arrested in the capital were suspected of illegally possessing fireworks and causing disorder, the police say. The PSG victory meant the club won the biggest prize in European club football for the first time in their history. PSG supporter Clement (20) says: “It’s so good and so deserved! We have a song that talks about our struggles, and it hasn’t always been easy. “But we got our faith back this year with a team without stars. They’re 11 guys who play for each other.” French president Emmanuel Macron’s office said he would host the victorious players on Sunday to congratulate them. In a message on X, Macron hailed a “day of glory for PSG”. A total of 11.5 million people tuned in across France to watch the match, according to figures given by the Mediametrie audience-measurement company and one of the broadcasters, Canal+. Derby Day Delight for the People’s Team In a thrilling showdown that lived up to its reputation as one of the fiercest derbies in Namibian football, the Orlando Pirates (affectionately known as the People’s Team) triumphed over their rivals Black Africa (the Lively Lions) with a convincing 3-0 victory.  The win propelled the Pirates to fourth place on the log, boasting an impressive 14 points and firmly asserting their dominance in this heated encounter. As the players took to the pitch at the Independence Stadium, the atmosphere was electric, with Pirates supporters chanting, “Sida di a Pirates ge”, proudly claiming bragging rights in the stands.  While the traditional drums and chants of “Hosa BA, Hosa BA” from the Black Africa faithful were noticeably absent, the Pirates fans filled the void with a passionate display of support. The match kicked off with high intensity, with Black Africa asking all the questions during the first stanza having a ball cleared off the goal line, but it didn’t take long for the People’s Team to stamp their authority on the game.  In the 14th minute, Clifton Dreyer opened the scoring with a brilliant finish that sent the Pirates fans into a frenzy. Picking up the ball just outside their penalty box, Samuel Nkosi fed Dreyer who ran unchallenged and expertly slotted a shot past the outstretched arms of the Black Africa goalkeeper, putting his team ahead early on. As the game progressed, Black Africa struggled to find their footing, with their attackers finding it difficult to penetrate a resolute Pirates defence. The Lively Lions attempted to control the midfield but were thwarted at every turn by Pirates’ relentless pressing and tactical awareness. The second half continued in much the same vein. Despite their attempts to level the score, Black Africa failed to break down the Pirates’ backline. As the clock ticked towards the 80th minute, Pirates put the game to bed. In a moment of brilliance, Albert Sapalalo embarked on a solo run from his own half, evading several defenders before slotting home a composed finish, doubling the lead for the People’s Team. The capstone moment of the match came in stoppage time when Dorian Eiseb rose to the occasion with a goal that will be talked about for weeks to come. Collecting a loose ball on the left side of the field, Eiseb unleashed a thunderous strike that soared into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. The fans erupted once again, and the Pirates were firmly in command at 3-0. Amid the joyous celebrations that followed Eiseb’s spectacular goal, Samuel Nkosi found himself in hot water, dramatically kicking down the corner flag in a display of raw emotion. Unfortunately for him, this impetuous outburst earned him a second yellow card, leading to his dismissal from the match – an ironic twist on a day that saw his team claim a resounding victory. As the final whistle blew, it was clear that Orlando Pirates had not only captured three crucial points but had also secured a solid claim to derby bragging rights. The Ghosts now sit comfortably in fourth place on the log, and with performances like these, the prospects of a strong season are looking bright. The People’s Team has once again proven their mettle, and as the supporters left the Independence Stadium, the echoes of “Sida di a Pirates ge” reverberated through the night, signalling a victory to remember. – Southern Stream First Division FB  The post Derby Day Delight for the People’s Team appeared first on The Namibian.

Under-resourced regions excelled at the Newspaper Cup Erasmus Shalihaxwe Kunene Region was crowned champions of the 2025 Nedbank Newspaper Cup after defeating Kavango West 2-0 in the football final, marking a historic first win for the team. The victory, achieved on home soil, was guided by head coach Tuerikondjera Kasaona, who made history as the first woman to coach a men’s team to a tournament win. Kasaona also serves as assistant coach of the Debmarine Premier League side Blue Waters. “This win means a lot to the people of Kunene. It’s even more special that we did it at home in front of our supporters who have been behind us since day one,” said Kasaona, who credited the players and the region’s supporters for the achievement. Former Kunene governor Marius Sheya applauded the team’s technical staff for their dedication. “It was not easy, but the coach and the team worked hard. Our plan was to win both football and netball, and while we fell short in netball, we are proud of this win,” Sheya said. In the netball final, Kavango East beat Omaheke 40-20 to claim the championship. Patricia Haikera of Kavango East was named Player of the Match. Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti, praised both Kavango regions for their strong performances.  “This is a great day for the Kavango regions. These are under-resourced regions, yet they reached the finals in both football and netball. This is a testament to their hard work,” Ballotti said. He also commended the tournament organisers and private sector sponsors for providing a platform for Namibian youth to showcase their talent.

Kunene rejoices in home success Tears of joy and relief flowed freely inside a packed Outjo Sport Stadium yesterday as host region Kunene claimed a historic first Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup title following a 2-0 win over Kavango West at Outjo. Goals by Dixon Khuriseb and the tournament’s best player, Brundhino Kandirikirira, ensured victory, sparking scenes of delirium as the home support rejoiced in finally ending decades of poor performances. Winning head coach Uerikondjera ‘Mammie’ Kasaona, who was carried aloft by her players at the final whistle, was speechless after guiding her home region to glory and in the process becoming the first woman to win the competition in that capacity. “This is a wonderful moment for my region. Thank you to the Kunene region for showing up in numbers to make sure that indeed we are a great people, and to show the nation what we can bring. Imagine, 23 years of this great competition and we just go out in the group stages,” a hoarse Kasaona said as her players and team’s supporters belted out victory songs and danced in the background. The victory was a fitting conclusion to the youth sport festival after four days of pulsating and non-stop action by the country’s next generation of stars. Two-time former winners Oshana finished third after beating one-time champion //Kharas 3-1 in the bronze medal. Ex-Kunene governor and chairperson of the local organising committee Marius Sheya say they had prepared to win both the football and netball competitions. “When we bid for this event I told the owners of this event that you’re going to take this event to Kunene and we’re going to win it. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t win the netball, but we gave our best,” says Sheya. Sheya says he was vindicated for pushing that Kasaona be appointed, having been impressed with her burgeoning reputation as a youth coach. Kunene coach Uerikondjera Kasaona is hoisted up by her players after winning the final. Photo: Contributed “I’m very happy and I’m emotional. I said can we change the coach and get a female coach who is very capable. And for the first time, a female coach has won this tournament. This is history. Thank you to everyone who supported our cause,” Sheya says. Kavango East reclaimed the netball crown, defeating perennial bridesmaids Omaheke 40-21 in a thrilling final contest. Kavango East netball team head coach Frans Ndara says: “Our team worked very hard during the preparations for the games and that has now paid off handsomely.” Ohangwena took third place by beating Khomas, who had won the netball title for the past three years, 42–33. It marked the first time in more than three years that Khomas did not finish in the top three. Deputy sport minister Dino Ballotti was on hand to witness the grand finale which left a lasting impression. “Well done to the people of Kunene for hosting such a wonderful spectacle. Congratulations to the champions Kunene for winning the football and Kavango East for winning the netball final,” Ballotti says. Kavango East pose with the trophy after beating Omaheke in the final. Photo: Contributed “The ministry and the sponsors have put millions into this event over the years for the infrastructure enhancement, sport development and providing a platform for our youth to showcase their talent with pride,” he adds. “These smart partnerships are what we want to continue to manifest all over the country. There are thousands here today, a testament that sport unifies Namibians.” INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Netball: Martha Mbulu (best shooter, Ohangwena); M Mukungu (best defender, Kavango East), Ndilimenke Erastus (player of the tournament, Ohangwena), Selma Bitler (umpire of the tournament); Victoria Shigwedha (most improved umpire).
