A close view of part of a fallen poplar trunk, dry and barkless with bits of reddish fungus showing and some darker beetle engraved lines, some of which show a Valentine heart
a wider view of the same fallen log mostly grey and free of bark, some browny and fungusy bits showing, and some fresh wood at the bottom-- where I removed clinging bark (I was cutting deadwood for firewood). The lines left by the beetle larvae continue above the heart, in hard to decipher squiggles, perhaps looking like a cartoon moose antler!
Usually I find the beetles/larvae that make marks under the bark of trees write obscure things- I presume prayers to #GreatMother #Goddess in an ancient language. This time the meaning was a bit more clear-though I'm sure it was still aimed at #ForestMother not me! #ShowHeart #PaganSky πΏπ· #Alberta
