Tiny nature laid altar/vignette- a single arrowhead shaped balsam poplar leaf (not full sized) has been windlblown to land face down on an old fallen log. The reddish brown leaf stem is at lower right of centre with the leaf angling through the centre toward upper left of centre. The fallen log is weathered bark free and grey with varying cracks lengthwise from left to right along the log, larger cracks and few gouges filled with red dry spruce needles. Much of the log is covered with lichen, from fine textured dull grey barely distinguishable from the wood to brighter blue-grey larger lichen in bits and swathes and tiny patches of orange. The edge of the log ends just below the top of the frame and we can see the blurred forest floor in red brown spruce needles and dry leaves.
Looking out from a fairly dark/dense mixed woods through the lower trunks of several spruce and poplar to the right and a single poplar at left. The trees are nearly silhouetted against the sunny bright green grass clearing beyond. The sun shines in a bit through the trees lighting bits of their leaves and needles and some of the needle strewn red brown ground below as well as low green vegetation creeping in in places. Across the clearing to the left we see distant low willows against a washed out sky, and to the right, a little more than half, the background beyond the green is the dark of another mixed wood. There's a very slight smoke haze, but the feeling is mostly spring green hope and wooded calm.

Spring altar laid on weathered wooden bench with at least 16 kinds of flowers and a half dozen kinds of foliage.Flowers are in various improvised vases- coloured votive candle holders, clear glass, earthenware pots etc. Lots of yellow including Marsh Marigold, Dandelions, Draba, Tulip and Corydalis; some blue/violet- Squill, Hepatica and Violet; white- Sweet Coltsfoot, Anemone, Violet and barely pink Cherry. Foliage- leaves and/or buds, catkins of Aspen and Balsam Poplar, Willow, Saskatoon, Dogwood, Honeysuckle etc. In the centre are the bird figurines: a shiny porcelain penguin in featureless white, and a smaller translucent glass owl with feather shapes molded in the glass and light blue eyes. The sun is shining and the ground around is littered with last year's leaves.
Part of the altar. Pale yellow Oxlip Primrose, deep gold Marsh Marigold and Corydalis and palest pink Nanking Cherry flowers along with several kinds of foliage in shades of green, purple tinged and bronze surround two bird figurines. There is a shiny porcelain penguin in featureless white, and a smaller translucent glass owl with feather shapes molded in the glass and light blue eyes. Mom collected penguin items for years, and Aunt D. collected owls so these are meant to represent the two sisters, but also to suggest Bird Goddess, one of the most ancient deities and connected to the Baltic/Latvian Great Mother (Mara or even Ragana! see several of my blog posts for more on that theme, link in bio).

In this view we see 2 small deep burgundy votive candle holders used as vases; one centre left is decorated with white dots and another to the right is decorated with a curlicue/scrollwork pattern in white. The left one holds several short stems of mustard like 4 petalled Draba flowers as well as several stems of native Corydalis with blue green lacy leaves and clusters of yellow narrow tube-like flowers; as well there is a single large (by comparison only!) tulip flower of deep gold with white tips on the 6 tepals. The one to the right holds around a dozen tiny violet coloured violet flowers, which look tiny even in the small glass vessel plus a few bits of not fully opened balsam poplar foliage.
1- As a youth I picked early #wildflower bouquets for Mom's birthday + #MothersDay When I moved back + planted spring flowers the bouquets grew; after Mom's passing, they became #spring celebrations of #rebirth the start of #Latvian #TimeOfFlowers + #GreatMother

The sun shines through a dry birch leaf still attached to the twig, golden to brown, with some dark spots and a transparent spot where probably some insect fed on it during summer, but mostly intact. It hangs down, and we see it straight on, with a much smaller leaf in front of it to the upper right, and even tinier bits above/behind. To the left we see another dark twig blurring into the snowy background, which is a mix of white with dark spots faded into grey/violet here and there. A filter has intensified the colours a bit and accentuated the violet tones in the background. A white vignette has been applied to the corners.

A close view of part of a fallen poplar trunk, dry and barkless with bits of reddish fungus showing and some darker beetle engraved lines, some of which show a Valentine heart
a wider view of the same fallen log mostly grey and free of bark, some browny and fungusy bits showing, and some fresh wood at the bottom-- where I removed clinging bark (I was cutting deadwood for firewood). The lines left by the beetle larvae continue above the heart, in hard to decipher squiggles, perhaps looking like a cartoon moose antler!
Usually I find the beetles/larvae that make marks under the bark of trees write obscure things- I presume prayers to #GreatMother #Goddess in an ancient language. This time the meaning was a bit more clear-though I'm sure it was still aimed at #ForestMother not me! #ShowHeart #PaganSky 🌿📷 #Alberta

Several gently arched dark thin stems in a patch of sunlight bear pendant shield shaped leaves of red-orange, speckled dark in places. There are little mounds of snow some of the leaves/stems, and a number of other stems/grasses criss cross the image against a backdrop of softly blue shadowed snow
Slightly gold green textured leaves of a shrub rose catch a bit of sun between the snow that covers more of the leaves, and the shadowed snow behind.
Several clusters of many wiry dark stems bear drooping dark catkin like seed heads against little mounds of snow, some catching the sun, others in light blue shadow. Other kinds of seed heads, hold snow like little umbrellas, rise blurrily behind.
Thin stems bearing deep gold oval leaves, some with specks or patterns of green, protrude over fresh white snow
