It’s because of who is in the room when the forms are designed. And who is not.
My @digitalservice.bund.de colleagues @paulpistorius.bsky.social and Julian Rösner discussed this at Code for America’s #FormFest: how the right parties involved form a triangle of success.

Graphic of a triangle. Each corner says "Form users", "Form owners" or "Form processors".
A few weeks ago we talked at #FormFest about why it is important to include all stakeholders into the form design process. We call it the triangle of success. Details in thread.
Triangle-shaped diagram with 3 boxes: 1. Form owners — policy 2. Form processors — operations 3. Form users — users
What does it need for a good form to emerge?
You need to involve the right parties in the #formDesign process right from the start.
📺 Here’s the ‘Triangle of Success’ talk my colleagues Julian & @paulpistorius.bsky.social shared at Code for America’s #FormFest:

#GovDesign
A one-storey Australian home. It’s got a big red roof and cream clapboard walls with a small porch supported by red wooden pillars, with wooden benches. The property is surrounded by a wooden fence with small green bushes outside. The fence has a blue plaque that says “Hearns Port Fairy Accommodation” and a smaller wooden notice that says “Railway Cottage”
Got so caught up in #FormFest that I forgot photo 20 from my Big Holiday, so today is a bumper edition.
Port Fairy used to be on the railway. This holiday cottage is one of the last remnants of the railway connection
Was really enjoying #FormFest but it's 9pm my time and it's been a long day - have had to give up on the last session.
Looking forward to reviewing recordings, especially as it's only possible to choose a couple of the breakouts.
Second accessibility presentation at #FormFest was about accessible documents in general rather than forms but was still great.
Alison Hiam (Wisconsin) showed us the actual impact of a variety of changes on a small document, very effective. And we got RickRolled twice - good fun.
#Accessibility
Continuing with #FormFest, loved the two presentations on forms accessibility.
1st up: Team from British Columbia. They improved family court forms, where many people do not have lawyers
Notable point: working hard to improve PAPER.

anyone else attending #FormFest today?
Another great #FormFest presentation
Paul Pistorius and Julian Rösner, @martinjordan.com's colleagues at the German Digital Service
Notable quotes:
"Asking unnecessary questions in a usable way is still asking unnecessary questions"
"The form is longer but easier to use"
#FormDesign #GovDesign
Loved the #FormFest presentation from the City of Reykjavik on improving the way services are provided for school children.
Notable quotes: "Forms arrive in backpacks"
"10% of the work is the work, 90% is stakeholder and change management"
#GovDesign
The #FormFest opening definitely included thinking about how to avoid asking form information that we already have, and about how we can share across government departments. Sessions coming up will cover that too
This is absolutely part of the conversation.
Joining #FormFest today to hear about (mostly) USA government and (some) outside the USA efforts to improve forms.
Thrilled to hear the Governor of Maryland Wes Moore give us a solid message about how better forms improve people's lives.

"Fix the forms, one at a time".
So excited to attend #FormFest again this year and learn from folks doing good work in civic tech! The registration form appears to still be open - the conference is free, online and TODAY from noon-5pm Eastern.
I wanted to share the virtual (and free) #FormFest event happening tomorrow where I'll be co-presenting with three other amazing women on the #MyMassGov project for the Commonwealth of #Massachusetts. #accessibility #a11y #WCAG web.cvent.com/hub/events/f...
Super excited to be speaking at #FormFest on Wednesday. Hosted by the The Beeck Center and #CodeforAmerica, this is one of the best conferences I’ve attended in #civictech, and I can’t wait to hear all the sessions!

A group of 5 light skinned people sitting around a table in a meeting room laughing — with a TV set at the end of the table saying “FormFest 2024” with a minimal graphic of a glowing red sun
Rehearsal hour for next week’s #FormFest talk ‘Triangle of success: involving the right parties into the form design process’.
My @digitalservice.bund.de colleagues @paulpistorius.bsky.social & Julian are on track for a fab talk on bringing policy, operations and users into the form design process
Formfest 2024 – better government, one form at a time
It’s greatly nerdy – #FormFest is returning on 4 December.
It’s a unique format for #GovDesign folks interested in creating better #forms.
