Cut a clean constellation cube! It’s cute! Maybe I’ll try a painted version next. #SciArt #FrameOfReference

Feels so good to spend the end of my holiday crafting after the effort of cleaning out my studio and my glowforge headache. Been trying to get to this point in the project for a few weeks!

I've downsized the #FrameOfReference to mini size. I started with a blank six sided di but the laser was having trouble focusing with its size. So here's a test with a 1.5" wood block. I think in this size I can get better symbols like star shapes, though it'll have to stay as dots for the dice.

I thought I might make a little dice version of my #FrameOfReference #SciArt sculpture, you know, just to mash two nerdy things together for no reason?

Boy the laser settings are fiddly though! The small size of the dice are a real challenge to getting clean, visibly separate dots with some depth.

"Seminar" is a strong word for this despite the heading, it was very informal. But it was fun to share about some of my art projects with colleagues! #SciArt #SkyhorseCarousel #FrameOfReference

A view of the piece during the day. It is dim with storm clouds overhead, and you can see some of the bulbs lit but it is too light outside to make out the constellation.

A picture of me smiling and leaning against the structure during the day. I am happy that we just completed the build. I'm wearing red shorts, a black sports bra, a pink and red scarf, cowboy hat, and black dusty combat boots.

It's past time I shared a little about our experience at Burning Man with the #FrameOfReference. Despite the wild weather this year, it was a big success! I'm proud of us for getting it out there! It did fine in the wind and rain, I only had to replace a couple of light bulbs all week. #SciArt

Not fully back online yet, but here is a teaser for you :) #SciArt #FrameOfReference

I’ll leave you with one final video showing all four sides of the Big Dipper ⭐️ #FrameOfReference #SciArt

Laser cut and etched wood plaques made in a sort of vintage Victorian aesthetic. One reads “FRAME OF REFERENCE”, another “Do not climb or tug lights”, and the last has pictures of the constellations along with a diagram of celestial coordinates.

Finished cutting all the plaques, now everything is packed up and ready to go!! I’ll bring back some photos from the event where there won’t be junk in the background haha, and hopefully of people enjoying it! :) #FrameOfReference #SciArt

I was able work out keeping Cassiopeia in the mix and it’s looking a bit better now I fixed the spacing ⭐️ The paper you see hanging is one of my handy reference diagrams. #SciArt #FrameOfReference

Since this project can never be finished I found a mistake in my code earlier, annoying but explains why a few stars didn’t look quite right. Just making some adjustments :) I always say I make my best art in the middle of the night, but maybe not when it’s math 😂 #SciArt #FrameOfReference

And with that, the full system is finally running with all three constellations! ✨ Now to run it for several days on its own for stress testing. Gotta make sure the timers stay programmed, turns on and off properly each AM/PM, generator has enough power, etc. #SciArt #FrameOfReference

Here’s a video of Scorpius! I’m relieved at how well the placement worked—it’s balance between filling the space and not having too much visual mess from cords. After I add Cassiopeia, I’ll put a black shade cloth over the grid at top to hide the shelf and cables from view. #SciArt #FrameOfReference

The side view of Scorpius. I imagine the constellation from this angle looks like a long necked bird or a leaping ballerina.

We hung Scorpius, I am in love ⭐️

I’ll take some more pics and video later once it’s fully dark. #SciArt #FrameOfReference

Preliminary test with the frame went well, though I need to adjust the heights and tweak some things. I ordered some matte black spray paint to see if I can reduce shine off the cables, I’m aiming for 3 constellations on a rotating timer if they aren’t too visually messy. #FrameOfReference #SciArt

We put the structure up! What we learned during this exercise is that there’s no way to safely put it up with only two people 🤣 We wanted to try, but will need to recruit some help for at Burning Man. The straps to attach the grids were too long so we reverted to zip ties for now. #FrameOfReference

At Ian’s suggestion, we’re calling the piece #FrameOfReference.

“Reference Frame” would be the more scientific term but I think the reverse will be more familiar to viewers and still get the point across.

I was anxious the constellation wouldn’t come across. One thing about #SciArt is that when working within the constraints of data it’s hard to know what it’ll look like until it’s done and you have limited control over the outcome. The whole point is to see the data in another way. #FrameOfReference

In our history, correct.
This is why so many can’t see it, IMO.
They’ve no historical #FrameOfReference therefore
“it can’t happen here”.

Our culture lives TOO much in a black/white consciousness. IMO, the “gray” is where life actually happens and real knowledge resides.

Black/white is a fantasy.

At first I was like, I cant believe they had a parade & that many people showed up! I didn’t think there were even that many people alive who still listen to The Eagles…

The Lost Clock Emporium I can’t remember exactly how I ended up at the Lost Clock Emporium. I do remember brushing by disturbed looking people making their way out. “Clock a load of you!”, the proprietor muttered, before loo...

Today I was playing with clocks, and a little story grew.
