Stein was a street photographer who was dismissed by the Nazis for "racial" reasons. As a Jew, he was forbidden to work and use the library. With a help of American journalist Varian Fry he fled Germany and eventually settled in New York.
Fred Stein, German-American Photographer (1909-67), was born on this day. (June 3, 1909)
