Freedom Writers (2007) - other than coffee cup gate, I really enjoyed it. Yes, it followed the usual formula, but who cares. It's a great film...and of course it made me cry.

Freedom Writers (2007) - just began this, and before I get into it, one observation. If this was set in the early/mid 1990s then the coffee cup Erin walks into school with bothers me. School trachers didn't have them back then!

You just know he's the kind of man that would have said "When we have kids, you spend 5 years as a stay at home mother and then I'll take time as a stay at home Dad so you can go to work" and then decide his career is too important to take a break from at the 5 year mark #FreedomWriters

White saviour story? Perhaps, that is not the question. #FreedomWriters is not perfect, but it is a true story that brought real change. The students are not erased for their teacher, it is their voices, not hers, that echo, because it is not about salvation, but acknowledgement.
The denouement fuelled my entire being with dread, the kind of grief you feel when strangers become family, and you have to say goodbye too soon. I wanted so much more, not because it was unfinished, because it was so fully alive, and our #FreedomWriters deserved to be witnessed.
#FreedomWriters is racial tension as a scar, the reason these kids were written off before their voices ever reached the page. Where Erin discusses the Holocaust, and it was unknown to almost all of them, the classroom becomes a field of shared loss... that silence was deafening.
Erin fuels their writing, giving them diaries, asking only for truth, and the realisation as they write that they do not suffer alone is profound, now shaping identity by sharing. Publishing The #FreedomWriters Diary is all there is left... becoming the author of their own story.
The morality of #FreedomWriters cuts deep, not through redemption, but because it was terrifying. That moment in court, Eva choosing voice over violence... it is about more than speaking, but the cost of it, and that visceral presence of April Lee Hernández eclipses illustration.
And yet, through that persistence Hilary Swank personifies, April Lee Hernández paints a rebellion. When Eva writes, it is defiance against the world that silenced her. Her eventual choice, to speak the truth about a local shooting, felt like the beating heart of #FreedomWriters.
