The Grey Between – Frenchtown A pizzeria that doesn’t make pizza is the sort of thing that makes you question whether you’ve wandered into some parallel reality where words mean nothing. But there we were, standing in Honey Moon Bakery & Pizzeria, being told they wouldn’t start making pizza until later next year. The cognitive dissonance was instant. What do you even call yourself then? This is how most photography days actually go. Not according to plan. Not bathed in golden hour light with cooperative subjects and perfect conditions. You load a roll of film you’ve never used before, drive to a small town on a day when the thermometer barely clears freezing, and hope something worth recording presents itself between disappointments. I’d brought the Nikon N2020 loaded with Ilford XP2 Super 400 specifically because I was nervous. First time with this film stock. First time shooting 35mm in over a year. The smart thing would have been to test it somewhere forgiving, somewhere I knew. Instead, I was in Frenchtown on a day where the light was doing absolutely nothing interesting. Flat grey overcast. Wind gusts making it feel colder than the temperature suggested. The kind of day where you question why you’re outside at all. Bridge Cafe · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · Bridge Cafe · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · But that flatness—that’s what the images show, isn’t it? Not drama. Not moment. Just the plain fact of a place existing on an unremarkable winter afternoon. The Petrified Wood Gallery with its ornate details. Chez Daniel with the white picket fence. The Bridge Cafe’s interior, all dark wood and ambient lighting. These aren’t heroic photographs. They’re just records of walking around whilst waiting for grilled cheese. Each frame on a roll of 36 costs something—not much, maybe 50 cents when you factor in processing—but enough that you notice. You’re thinking: is this worth it? And on a grey day in a small town, the answer keeps being: probably not, but I’m here anyway, so yes. Each frame costs something—not much, maybe 50 cents when you factor in processing—but enough that you notice. You’re not spraying and praying. You’re thinking: is this worth it? And on a grey day in a small town, the answer keeps being: probably not, but I’m here anyway, so yes. The motorcycles outside Bridge Cafe were parked on Front Street, and they looked cold. Not people-cold, but metal-cold. The kind of cold that makes chrome look sharper, less friendly. Frenchtown attracts motorcyclists the way New Hope and Lambertville do—river towns with bridges seem to pull them in. On better days, you’d see groups of them, leather and noise and camaraderie. Today, just two parked bikes and no riders in sight. Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · Inside Wild Fern, we were the only customers at first. I ordered the Moss, an English mild at 4.0%, served in a proper pint mug with a handle. Bhavna got a half pour of the Coast IPA. We’d driven up specifically for this—the brewery was the destination, not the photographs. But having the camera meant the journey became textured differently. The walk down Bridge Street wasn’t just movement between locations; it was frames, possibilities, decisions about what to record. Wild Fern Brewing · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · Wild Fern Brewing · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · XP2 has wide latitude, which helped with the indoor shots at Wild Fern. The window framing daylight against dark interior is a massive dynamic range. The grain stayed fine even where I’d underexposed. The -33 adjustment to whites in Lightroom just brought things back to where they probably should have been if I’d given the film more light to begin with. Bhavna · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · The photograph of Bhavna eating—that’s the one that matters. Direct eye contact, mid-bite, no fuss. It’s not artful. It’s just there. Which is maybe the point of carrying a camera on days like this. Not to capture something extraordinary, but to notice that you’re somewhere with someone, doing something as simple as eating and drinking beer whilst the cold waits outside. Wild Fern Brewing · Saturday 20 December 2025 Nikon N2020 · ISO 400 · AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 · 50 mm · Then it was time to go. * * * **Name** | Ilford XP2 Super 400 ---|--- **Price** | ~$10 per roll **Type** | Black and white negative film **Format** | 35mm **Base Stock** | Ilford XP2 **Native ISO** | 400 **Exposed ISO** | 400 **Exposure Compensation** | 0 **Features** | Chromogenic B&W, C-41 process, fine grain, wide exposure latitude **Lab** | Boutique Film Lab **Process** | C-41 chemistry **Scanner** | Epson Perfection V600 **Software** | VueScan 9, Adobe Lightroom Classic 15.0.1 **Shooting Notes** | Camera set to auto exposure, autofocus, and auto aperture. Mid-winter overcast skies, just above freezing with high wind gusts. Flat grey light for outdoor shots. Indoor scenes at Bridge Cafe and Wild Fern had ambient/natural window light. Some frames underexposed; adjusted whites -33 in Lightroom during processing. ### Like this: Like Loading...

A manhole cover from Frenchtown, NJ featuring a diamond hatch pattern with a central rectangular removal with the text 1964 written in a weak typeface. That hatch pattern has a circular border with the text “Borough of Frenchtown” above and “Sanitary Sewer” below in the same weak typeface. All set in grey asphalt with a few cracks leaving from the set ring.

The image is a picturesque view of a hillside village, Roussillon, in the south of France . The buildings are clustered together, densely packed, with terracotta roofs and warm-toned ochre walls. The architecture is traditional and historic. Lush green pine trees partially obscure the lower portion of the village, creating a contrast between the man-made structures and the natural landscape. A bell tower is visible, suggesting the presence of a church or other significant building. The backdrop is a range of softly shaded mountains, completing a tranquil, almost idyllic scene. The overall impression is one of age, serenity, and a connection to the land.

Wild Fern Brewing – Opening Day Saturday, 26 October 2024, in New Jersey, was a bit overcast, with just enough sunlight trying to peek through the clouds. The temperature was good for being outside—cool, crisp air that made it feel like fall had truly settled in. Bhavna and I had made plans to check out Wild Fern Brewing’s opening day, and after a one-hour drive through the scenic Hunterdon County countryside, we found ourselves in Frenchtown, a quiet riverside town along the D&R Canal State Park Trail. Frenchtown is the kind of place where the streets are lined with charming, older buildings that house local shops and cafes, with a real small-town vibe.
