A Strong Hand Is No Assurance of Strong Writing Dale Tudge There was a woman of my acquaintance who could produce written prose at a rate that defied physiological expectation. She had, I will say, the fastest transcribing hand I have encountered in any century. She could write for hours without fatigue, without hesitation, and without, it must be admitted, hand cramping. The material was appalling. Execrable. It was truly the output of a hand operating without proper supervision. When a palsy disrupted her hand, the mind — frustrated, forced into an unfamiliar patience — began producing sentences that were, for the first time, worth the ink. She did not consider this adequate compensation.

When my #writing hand grew cramped, the other could always be called into service—though with some compromise of legibility.

When both wrists were lamed by the typewriter, and little fingers strained by the constant shifting of an Underwood No. 5, I was properly buggered.
