Something for nothing is just an illusion Years ago, I lived in a rural residential neighborhood on an old gravel road. Once a year a neighbor collected money to oil a certain portion of that road to reduce dust. Each household pitched in, but one neighbor always declined because he never drove the shorter dusty route. However, after the work was done, that neighbor was seen routinely driving down the oiled road. Had the neighbor paid up, we might have had year-round blacktop. As the saying goes, “You don’t get something for nothing.” There is always a price: You can’t have the cancer cure when you don’t fund the research. You can’t have lead-free baby food when you don’t fund food inspectors. You can’t board safe planes when you don’t have Federal Aviation Authority staff, and you can’t have an educated productive Iowa workforce if you don’t fund public education.
