BCM Neurosurgery Chair and Glioblastoma (GBM) expert Dr. Ganesh Rao discusses this aggressive and lethal brain tumor.

CAUSES

We do not have a good understanding of why these tumors form. We know generally they form in people 50-60 years old, but they can occur in any age group. Numerous studies have investigated environmental causes, but nothing definitive has been reported.

The outcome tends to be poor because treatments to date have not been effective at eradicating the tumor cells that remain after surgery. Tumor cells can spread quickly throughout the brain, particularly on white matter tracts between lobes of the brain.

SYMPTOMS

Most patients present with some kind of overt neurological symptom, like headache, weakness, seizure, or sensory disturbance which can include visual changes and numbness or clumsiness.

Particularly, tumors in the frontal lobe can cause personality changes, but new information from our neuropsychology colleagues suggests that tumors in other parts of the brain that we thought were clinically silent (for example, the right temporal lobe) can also cause subtle personality changes.

Hi, all — this is Rachel. On August 9, 2016, I saw my dad, Don, for the last time.

Just two days later, he passed away at 69 from #glioblastoma (GBM), a devastating disease we had already seen once before in our family.

In 1994, my maternal grandfather, Erwin, also died of GBM. He was 69.
