A mandrake themed chocolate dessert. There’s a small pot with cookies & cream “dirt” and a chocolate mandrake sticking out of it. Surrounding the pot there are a few green meringue leaves, chocolate wafer branches and sponge sand.
Who knew mandrakes were so delicious!

Learnt a few new things today:
1. Plum Wine is not a wine. “Umeshu” is made by steeping unripened plums “ume” in sugar & distilled liquor (usually shochu).
2. Umeshu originated as a remedy for sore throats & I can vouch for its efficacy.
3. Umeshu is delicious & I’m a fan!

Saigō Takamori is regarded as the hero of Modern Japan & 1 of the 3 leaders of the Meiji Restoration. Our guide said he committed seppuku (suicide) after being injured in battle, but the exact manner of his death is unknown.
