A week before the new rules on general purpose artificial intelligence #GPAI enter into force in the #EU – affecting tools such as #ChatGPT & #Gemini – US Big Tech giant #Meta said last week that it will not sign, having slammed the rules for stifling innovation. www.euronews.com/my-europe/20... #AI

6️⃣ #AI Office is going out of its way to:

😊Take a collaborative, staged and proportionate approach to regulatory supervision & enforcement
😊Encourage close informal cooperation with #GPAI providers
😊Point out that it will not be on enforcement mode until 2 Aug 2026 (a year after obligations kick in)

5️⃣ Signing up to the “voluntary” #GPAI Code of Practice means:
✅ Enforcement limited to monitoring adherence
✅Increased trust from @ec.europa.eu

Not adhering to the CoP means:
🛑Explaining how alternative measures work
🛑Carrying out gap analysis
🛑Larger number of requests for info & access

2️⃣ An upstream actor is a model provider UNLESS it has clearly and unequivocally excluded the distribution & use of the #GPAI model in the EU (including the integration of the model into #AI systems intended for the EU).

The key messages from the #GPAI Guidelines are in my view the following:

1️⃣ There is a presumption that a model “displays significant generality” if:
⏩️ its training compute is greater than
10^23 FLOP, and
⏩️ can generate language, images or video.

BUT it is just a presumption!
