WMD Threats are evolving & so are #GPWMD responses. WMD Relevant Technologies such as AI, drones, synthetic biology, & gene editing have the potential both to accelerate & exacerbate #WMD threats – but also offer threat reduction & non-proliferation solutions.
The progress made this week has set clear paths for action under the French GP Presidency, reinforcing the #GPWMD as a leading international WMD threat reduction mechanism.
📍 This week, #GPWMD members and partners gathered in Paris for the first Global Partnership Working Group (#GPWG) meeting of 2026 under France’s #G7 presidency.
In the rapidly changing security landscape, France is committed to ensuring the #GPWMD remains dynamic, responsive, & focused on delivering real impact in preventing #WMD proliferation.

This week in Vientiane, #GPWMD partners 🇨🇦, 🇯🇵, 🇰🇷, 🇪🇺, and 🇬🇧 met with #ASEAN countries and external stakeholders to further strengthen health security collaboration to mitigate biothreats in ASEAN.
Chemical weapons destruction is a top #GPWMD priority and #CWD25 is a must-attend event. It is a key platform for collaboration, innovation, and progress on chemical weapons demilitarisation.

Building on those early successes, #GPWMD has expanded globally – evolving to meet emerging threats & delivering cooperative threat reduction projects thanks to the contributions of its members & partners.
In its first decade, #GPWMD achieved major milestones in addressing WMD threats in the former USSR:
✅ Destroyed chemical weapons
✅ Dismantled decommissioned nuclear submarines
✅ Disposed of fissile materials
✅ Redirected former weapons scientists in Russia & the former USSR
More than two decades later, #GPWMD remains the leading international #WMD threat reduction mechanism – delivering tangible results through cooperative projects to prevent, detect, & respond to CBRN proliferation & terrorism 🌐
Today marks 23 years since the launch of the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons & Materials of Mass Destruction #GPWMD at the 2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
The #G7's return to Kananaskis this year is a chance to reflect on how far we've come. #GP23
Under Canada’s 2025 G7 Presidency, #GPWMD is developing a strategy and action plan to counter and leverage (for good!) WMD relevant technologies.
