When I reviewed the votes as of today (10/10) it was no surprise #BaudinsBlackCockato and #GangGangCockatoo were right up there in the top 3. These two, and the leading #TawneyFrogMouth are #habitatdependent species that are diving headlong into #extinction.

🌏 Gang-gang cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum)

Gang-gang cockatoos are stocky, mostly grey parrots with a wispy crest. Males sport a distinctive scarlet head and crest, while females have a grey head and crest with pink and yellow feather edges underneath. Their call is a unique, creaking or grating sound. Gang-gang cockatoos inhabit the cooler, wetter forests and woodlands of south-eastern Australia, including alpine regions, moving to lower altitudes and more open woodlands in winter. Often seen in small groups, they can form larger flocks when foraging for seeds, berries, fruits, nuts, and insect larvae, mostly in trees. They are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. No subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Vulnerable (IUCN 3.1)

Recent oil painting on linen of a gang gang cockatoo with Lilly pilly berries. David Diller from Cranbourne was fantastic enough to let me use his pic as inspiration, while being gracious about everything I changed.
