Doing the RSPB Garden Birdwatch so took a few photographs to assist with counting. I absolutely love these long tailed tits - they are so sweet! Let's do all we can to help them.

A flurry of activity late on when the sparrows descended ! Might try again over the weekend if we have a dry spell and the record the best! #nature #GardenBirdWatch #BigGardenBirdWatch
Garden Bird Watch... filled up the feeders but I think some other garden has opened up their buffet and they have the deluxe platter as it's currently very quiet in my garden #nature #GardenBirdWatch #BigGardenBirdWatch
On this week's episode of the Wildlife Matters podcast we share our guide on how to help your garden birds during the winter. Plus, a reminder that the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is happening this weekend. Let's spread the word and help our birds thrive this winter!

Rooks in garden
The #rooks have discovered the fatballs in the garden & are becoming masters of dislodging the top from the feeder and dropping the contents to the ground.

I spotted this GS Woodpecker on the peanut feeder in the garden, while doing the dishes. I grabbed my phone and quickly managed to capture this. The neighbouring tree it used to live in was chopped down a couple of years ago, so I'm glad it's returned.

Blue tit in garden
Blue tit on willow tree
A favourite perch for the #bluetits in our garden is the willow tree. They find plenty of insects to peck off the leaves. Not long until those leaves all fall #autumn 🍁

Coal tit on bird feeder in East Lothian
Lovely to see the diminuitive #coaltit on the garden feeders. Most likely just passing through as they join mixed flocks moving between habitats in search of food. Just 4.5inches long and 8-10g in weight.

The #starlings were certainly enjoying their bird bath this afternoon - they soon empty it with all their splashing around. We’re lucky to regularly have them in the #garden - sometimes up to 40 at a time.

Magpie on garden feeder
Magpie in garden
I’m easily distracted from “paperwork admin” by what’s going on around me. Today it was the raspy cackle of the #magpies in the garden that drew my attention away. Their call may at times sound a bit monotonous but their blue-green tail and wing colours are stunning.

Dunnock
And finally #30DaysWild - Day 30.
The elusive #dunnock - often we hear its melodious song but it doesn’t often appear when we’re around the garden keeping hidden in the undergrowth. A beautiful #songbird.

Songthrush garden
Day 16 #30DaysWild - catching up on things at home today. Still nice to be accompanied by a #songthrush in the garden & to hear the calls & songs of various other #songbirds around

It’s #30DaysWild the
@the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social - engagement campaign designed to get people appreciating or doing something for nature each day in June. I’m starting with entering my weekly #gardenbirdwatch details & appreciating the juvenile blackbirds which become more independent each day
Fledgling blackbird
Male blackbird tends its young
Juvenile blackbird
The male #blackbird was tending its recently fledged young … whilst the female is responsible for incubating the eggs the male takes his share of responsibility for feeding the chicks & young.

Young starling
Young starling being fed
The first of the juvenile #starlings have landed in the garden - hungry mouths to feed. @bto-gbw.bsky.social

House sparrow in East Lothian garden
European starling in East Lothian garden
A tranquil moment for the #magpies in our #garden. But they’ve been rushing at the ground feeding #starlings & pestering the #housesparrows in the hedge - the sparrows seemed to see them off though. Like their iridescent blue-green colours.

Rook in East Lothian Garden
Unmistakable shape of an adult #Rook with its greyish skin around the bill. An infrequent visitor to our #garden but 3 popped in together. @btobirds.bsky.social ringing records indicate oldest known bird reached 22 yrs & 11 months & average lifespan is 6yrs

Songthrush in East Lothian garden
Fortunate to have a #Songthrush pair hanging around for the summer (hopefully) … generally keeping cover in the flower borders but occasionally a little braver. The upturned hearts on their breast are very distinctive. A real beauty.

Songthrush in garden
It’s not often we get #songthrush in the garden. Looking back at records I have only ever recorded a single bird, 4 times before, during my weekly counts over the last 8 years. A bonus therefore to see 2 feeding and preening in the garden today.
