The emergence of Sonic and what it means for DeFi: Report Fantom, a pioneer in directed acyclic graph (DAG) design for distributed ledgers, had fast finality and low transaction fees but relied on Ethereum-derived account storage and the EVM, leading to bloated storage and slow execution times. To address these issues, the Fantom team created Sonic, a new blockchain network with a proprietary execution engine, SonicVM, which dynamically translates EVM bytecode for faster execution. SonicVM is compatible with EVM, allowing Fantom smart contracts to run seamlessly on the new blockchain. Sonic also uses a new database design, SonicDB, which separates the blockchain state into two databases, reducing data storage requirements by up to 90%. The Sonic mainnet is powered by a new native token, S, which can be converted from FTM at a 1:1 ratio, and will remain non-inflationary for six months before minting 6% of the initial supply to reward early users. Sonic rewards developers via its Gas Fee Monetization mechanism, forwarding up to 90% of transaction fees to developers. Andre Cronje, one of the founders of Fantom, is spearheading DeFi innovation on Sonic with Flying Tulip, a new DeFi platform that combines trading, liquidity pools, and lending functionalities.
