There’s a VERY popular subgenre in anime known as Yaoi, where Gay relationships are explicitly depicted….for the titillation of heterosexual teenage girls. As you might imagine, it can get very problematic.

Does Gay representation get better in Japanese anime? It’s just as complicated and infuriating as American animated media, but in a different way. For example, there’s Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with protagonists so hypermasculine, they’re super Gay.
