Okay Bluesky , #rocksky, #geologysky friends...
Do we like the Krumbein-phi scale, or the ISO:14688-1:2022 scale more?🤘🪨
Outside of carnelian stone. It looks pretty plain, brown with a dark orange tint...
... But inside we see that there is a chamber inside and how the liquid stone cooled. There's a bubble inside. Also, there is a place where one cooling piece pushed into the larger one, with a seam.
The outside of the stone (~7"x5") with a light shining through.

So, hubby was gifted with a basket of rocks this past weekend. Mostly tumbled agate and petrified wood, beautiful pieces. But this... this is pure carnelian, no inclusions. It's about 7"x5" and weighs about 3 lbs. We've never seen anything like it.

1// Another one of my treasures. I believe this is a mix of Jasper's and some other minerals. I found it at the same rock bed where I found some other raw red jasper.

Hey, #geologysky, #geographysky, and maybe even just Albertasky: why are the east and west sides of the Red Deer River valley so different in land use? Is it a soil quality thing (and if so, what caused that), or just historical land use patterns perpetuating themselves?
Geology folks, what’s going on here? I took these photos recently in Port Hacking (coastline south of Sydney, Australia). Mostly sandstone and is that shale wedged between layers? What story does this tell? #geologysky
Julia Famiglietti standing in front of her research poster
Tomorrow (7/16), @umdgeology.bsky.social graduate student Julia Famiglietti is taking over our Instagram story from the Jug Bay Wetlands!
Julia will be collecting air and water samples for her research measuring methane concentrations and isotopes. Follow along: instagram.com/umdscience #GeologySky
From a recent hike at Crack In the Ground, Eastern Oregon. A fascinating place to contemplate deep time and geologic forces. #crackintheground #easternoregon #geologysky #notpolitics
Any #geology peeps willing to answer a question?
Is an underground (like in a cave system) slip (water/mud) possible if given the impetus of an earthquake?
I wasn't bad at geology, but I'm definitely not an expert. My research says probably possible.
Boosts appreciated

What on earth did I find here? This is from a creek bed in the Finger Lakes region, NY. #GeologySky #RockSky
A hand displays a translucent, pale yellowish rock with a glossy, striated surface, set against a sunlit, grassy high desert terrain.
Several colorful stones—including bright red jasper, rusty orange petrified wood, and white quartz-like rocks, chalcedony—are neatly arranged on a larger flat stone amidst a scattered rocky and grassy desert floor.
A hand holds a small, heart-shaped red rock with a rough surface, against a dry, rocky desert landscape scattered with stones and sparse vegetation.
A hand holds a small, dark, glossy hematite stone with a lumpy texture, framed by dry grass, scattered pebbles, and a background of high desert vegetation.
More #witchyfinds, chalcedony, jasper, petrified wood and hematite. #witchmadness #geologysky #arizonasky
Photo of a hand holding an approximately baseball-sized (but irregularly shaped) rock. Most of the rock is greyish brown, but it has pores that are a pale turquoise color.
Same rock as the first picture, but zoomed out so you can see I am holding another similar rock.
Anyone know what I’m looking at here? Found these rocks on a walk the other day (NW Iceland). I see quite a few of these with orange spots from iron, but haven’t seen blue before. Is this copper? Nickel? #geologysky
Well, now... Data points suggests that the magma chamber at Svartsengi is refilling at a fairly rapid fashion.

A piece of yellow petrified wood
Check out this beautiful piece of petrified wood I found out back 😍 🪄 #geologysky
Okay #geologists of bluesky... #geologysky ?
I'm looking through my cool rocks that I've collected over time. I think I found this one in the Little Switzerland area of North Carolina. Is the pretty rainbow stuff just mica or something? It's pretty under light 😅🌈

Some nice rose quartz from my collection #crystalsky #geologysky #witchsky I think their called worry stones or Lenz
tagging #GeologySky 🧪 This is another one of my favourite things about Vancouver Island, although i'm way too chicken to go spelunking. A guy in my town has a cave bug named after him (Haplocampa wagnelli)
Okay BlueSky, I am stumped. This stone came from Petra tou Romiou and it’s a very odd rock. I have had a hard time learning anything about it or why it looks like this. (see thread for other photos). #WitchSky #GeologySky #ArcheologySky
