This the almost transparent casting of the outer skin from a snake. The snake would have chosen the wiry dense branches of a hedge to grip the skin while it slithered out of the head end leaving the dead epidermis behind, a ghostly white shadow of itself for us to find. The entire cast was some 50cm long arranged on a black velvet background and is curled into two loops with the gaping mouth top left left and the tail curving up to the right.

Close up of the head of the casting. The skin is split from the corners of the mouth almost to the back of the head to allow the body to slip out. Each individual scale is visible as a translucent segment edged with white to give a lace-like effect. The crystal-clear outer scale, or spectacle, that covered the eye is also cast.
