ジル・ド・レのジャンヌ対する忠誠は、信仰のようなものであったといいます。領地に戻り、ジャンヌの救出に失敗すると、錬金術や魔術に手を出し、祖父から相続した財産を失ってしまいます。さらに、少年の虐殺に手を染め、数百人とも千人ともいわれる犠牲者を出した。このことから、のちの青髯のモデルとなりました。
