Like too many vacant Glaswegian buildings, the Apollo burned down in 1987 and was subsequently demolished. The current Cineworld building was constructed on the site in 2000.

Originally opened as Green's Playhouse in 1927, it was re-branded as a music venue in 1973 and opened with two concerts by Johnny Cash. It quickly became a favourite venue of both performers and audiences.
