Depicted standing on clouds, wearing a long dress, with a serene face and hair in a bun.
Guanyin, the bodhisattva of infinite compassion, is one of the most commonly depicted Buddhist figures in Chinese art.
She was believed to have the ability to bless every suffering person in the mortal world.
Although in India the bodhisattva was originally understood to be either genderless or male, in far eastern countries like China Japan and Korea, female manifestations such as this one were common.

An antique late 19th to early 20th century late Meiji period Japanese carved wood sculpture of the goddess Kannon also known as Guanyin in China and Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit. Kannon is a bodhisattva, a being who has attained enlightenment, but delays going to Nirvana (paradise) in order to help the less fortunate in the world. The name translates to "one who hears the sounds of the world" or "one who perceives all," emphasizing her ability to listen to and respond to the suffering of all beings. Kannon has various forms and representations, such as Senju Kannon (Thousand-armed Kannon) and Bato Kannon (Horse-headed Kannon).
She is seen as a protector of women, children, and sailors, and is often invoked for help and guidance. This particular Kannon sculpture was hand carved from wood in the late 19th to the early 20th century, and is very finely and realistically carved with a great deal of detail, and a serene compassionate expression on her face. She is seated with one knee up which symbolizes her readiness to help others. She also has a carved wood seashell on the edge of her robe which symbolizes her protective nature and the fact that she is invoked by sailors and fishermen for safe voyages and bountiful catches. Many coastal communities in Japan have erected statues of Kannon overlooking the ocean, symbolizing her presence and protection. The statue has attained a dark patina with age, and I have left it untouched as found. She measures 11" tall by 8" wide by 4.5" deep at bottom. Unmarked, but unmistakably the work of the most talented of Japanese craftsmen/woodworkers. I especially love how the limbs of the figure follow the grain of the wood! A masterpiece of wood carving! From a local Tucson estate of a collector of fine Asian, African, and Oceanic arts. Excellent antique condition.
