Tonight I return to a comedy that I enjoyed and thought was fairly horrid at the same time. I am watching GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART tonight "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". #Christmas2025 #GoodnightSweetheart #BBC #RadioTimes
My new hobby is niche but unsatisfying. It's reporting all the #GoodnightSweetheart "Where are they now" YouTube videos that imply half the cast died in disturbing ways.
The last ever (unless you ignore the new novel) #GoodnightSweetheart last night, and I'm not quite sure what I was expecting. The creators have talked about this a lot, and I've never seen it so their statements coloured my expectations a lot. So I was expecting something else.
Big moment: the last #GoodnightSweetheart of its regular run, and as you expect the creators come back to tie things off. And it quickly becomes clear that they see the premise of the show differently to eferyone else they've had in over the years.
Penultimate #GoodnightSweetheart (of the original run) last night, and I was surprised by just how good it was. Nothing showy, just a nice premise done well: a photo of Gary in 1945 ends up in a biography of Noël Coward and has to prevent Yvonne seeing it. That's it.
Nearing the end of #GoodnightSweetheart with a final episode from Sam Lawrence, whose peak was the Gary meets Ian Lavender episode last series. This time he doesn't have anyone as good as Lavender to boost the writing, although a bonus Lynda Baron does light up her brief moment.
So nearly done with #GoodnightSweetheart and we get a surprise Bonnie Langford, playing absolutely to type as a chipper and game wartime troop entertainer. She is criminally unused, but the joy I felt at seeing her suffused the whole episode anyway.
We're running out of #GoodnightSweetheart episodes, and its clear they're auditioning ways for the series to end: this time, travellers from the future arrive and threaten to close down Gary's time portal. in contrast to the last one, it's a bad idea saved in the execution.
A surprisingly fun but fatally flawed #GoodnightSweetheart as for the first time, Gary tries walking down Duckett's passage the other way while in 1945 and ends up facing off against Jack the Ripper. The conceit is so beautifully simple you have to applaud it, even as the episode falls apart.
Another odd #GoodnightSweetheart last night, basically an extended riff on Brief Encounter that they called Grief Encounter without it ever being entirely clear that anyone was grieving. Maybe it was Gary, whining like a teenager because he's not getting enough attention from his two wives.
Unexpectedly cute #GoodnightSweetheart last night as the show starts to move us to an ending, or possibly one of those new status quos it moves into every now and again. Reg retires, Phoebe rents a nightclub, and Yvonne wants to start again in California.
The last #GoodnightSweetheart contribution from Gary Lawson and John Phelps last night. They've chipped in since series two, and had some big hits: the Phoebe and Yvonne meet episode was one of theirs. They have a soft spot for Ron, and are the ones who have correctly identified Gary as the villain.
It's the final leg, the last full season (so far) of #GoodnightSweetheart and we open at last with an acknowledgement that Yvonne is a rubbish millionaire. The modern Sparrows finally move out of their suburban house and into somewhere that must be exclusive because its very pokey.
Finalé of the penultimate season of #GoodnightSweetheart, probably the most memorable episode they ever did, certainly for me, and the first the outright say that Gary can change the past if he wants to. It's more slight than I remember, but still a highlight.
Penultimate #GoodnightSweetheart of the series, and a perfectly acceptable episode: Gary has a presentiment of his death and tries to avoid it, and Phoebe becomes a singer in a way which feels like a little bit of an indulgence to the actress.
Bit more #GoodnightSweetheart last night, and an up-and-down affair. Ron's life takes a turn for the worst, to punish him for having fun last week, and Gary "enjoys" a hoary old dream-led episode, so we get lots of kooky scenes ending with him waking up somewhere and sighing.
Part 2 of Gary's French adventure in #GoodnightSweetheart and we open with the writer's responding to my posts about the first part by making it quite clear they are doing an Allo Allo bit, for God's sake. Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once: Allo Allo did it better.
First of a two-part #GoodnightSweetheart last night, and it's a doppelganger story, arguably the third if you could Ron making it back to the 1940s and there being some acknowledgement (swiftly ignored) that Phoebe might think him his own grandfather. Three is two series: someone likes doubles.
A quick #GoodnightSweetheart and Gary finally decides that maybe he could make some money by gambling on races in the 1940s that he's already found out the results of in the 90s. It's a bit of an odd episode, more highlighting that it should have been done a lot earlier than anything else.
Just upped my pledge as there's been add ons.

Carrying on my trend for second parts, last night #GoodnightSweetheart gave me part two of its "the portal's on the fritz" arc: Ron goes back to the 1940s. The previous episode was a blast, stretching the format with the threat of breaking it, and I had hopes for this one. Sadly dashed in the end.
Just when I thought I was out, #GoodnightSweetheart pulls me right back in again. It turns out IMDB was right, and the next episode is one of the best. It's a format buster, with a bomb going off in Duckett's Passage being used as an excuse to let Phoebe go through the portal to the modern day.
Another #GoodnightSweetheart and everything has changed. Change is an odd thing in sitcom: it's a genre that succeeds pretty much entirely on predicability, familiarity and stasis, and attempts to keep things interesting with novelty often just highlight that the party is coming to an end.
Real life goal to do RHLSTP!!!!! Was so excited. We did talk about #goodnightsweetheart, obvs, but not whilst we were running.
