A pothole on a flat mesa top reflects the sky and its fluffy white and gray clouds. The pothole has a small blue spruce growing next to it. The ground is a layer of old basalt, covered with rocks, grasses, and boulders. You can see patches of blue spruce among other evergreens here and there over the mesa top in the background.

Looking up a hillside on the Grand Mesa, you can see a line,from left to right in the midground, of young aspen trees in colors ranging from green to yellow to orange and red. The foreground shows red soils with black basaltic rocks, shrubs and grasses. There is a line of dark green firs behind the aspen, and a brilliant blue sky above it all, with white and gray clouds.
