I was just discussing the AIDS Memorial Quilt in my #GraphicCultures class. We were reading @comicnurse.bsky.social’s TAKING TURNS, which has a drawing depicting the largest indoor display of the Quilt in Chicago in 1998.
Love this comics project! One reason comics & graphic narratives have been a focus of the book banners is because they are so effective at communicating complex ideas & issues to diverse audiences. #GraphicCultures
In my #GraphicCultures class this semester, I'm having students do a project that utilizes memory work as method. I'm calling this exercise "Memory work: Re-drawing a photograph"--you can find the description on my syllabus posted here...

Working on my syllabus for my #GraphicCultures class this fall. Book stack 📚of some of the texts we’ll be reading.
Omg! Cannot wait for this. If you haven’t read the first book, do it—it’s brilliant. #GraphicCultures

Check out the amazing comic my student Leah Walker made for my #GraphicCultures class & posted with her permission on the Drawing|Teaching|Healing blog. Such a moving tribute to her sister & other healthcare workers caring for folks with COVID.

Finished up my #GraphicCultures class with Chanel Miller's powerful animated short "I Am With You," in which she demonstrates how drawing can be a means of healing from trauma.

Chanel Miller’s latest comic in the New Yorker is a brief respite amidst all the horror now. I’m grateful for her sometimes searing, sometimes gentle, always brilliant work.

Very cool! I’m teaching FUN HOME in my #GraphicCultures class in a couple weeks & have also had a quick dip into her archives at Smith. Can’t wait to go back!
