Post Office Preferred envelopes : information leaflet : GPO : London : 1969 : cover : In the 1960s, with the development of mechanised sorting of post, many Post Office authorities attempted to increase the standardisation of envelope and stationery sizes to allow for ease of handling. The British GPO - General Post Office - was amongst these and this was promolgated at around the same time the new Inland Letter Service was introduced on 16 September 1968 as well as the nationwide introduction of postcodes. This leaflet, issued in mid-1969, gives details of the new preferred sizes, along with information as to the potential surcharge that would be made if non-preferred size envelopes were used. This information has been amended by the use of panel (PL 236A) that says "A firm date will be announced later". Interestingly in Parliament in 1967 it was noted that the surcharge would be introduced by the autumn of that year; as it was the surcharge on non-POP stationery never was introduced. Eventually major changes to linking postal charge to the dimensions as well as the weight of an item would be introduced in the UK in 2006. I do recall the symbol for POP stationery appearing quite widely on packets of envelopes and postcards and I suspect that the sizes were also allied to the introduction and acceptance in the UK of ISO 216 international "A" paper sizes based on metric proportions. The leaflet has the text with capital letters in red with the GPO symbol and the POP symbol in red below.
I must be getting on as yes, I recall the POP symbol - Post Office Preferred envelopes; part of a standardisation that began in the late '60s to help modernise postal services with mechanical sorting & postcodes. #post #graphicdeisgn @doublearrow64.bsky.social
