The story starts with George Hull, a tobacco farmer and cigar seller, who lived near Cardiff, NY, south of Syracuse. Hull had an avid interest in science and Darwin’s theory of evolution. He was an avowed atheist and went to a Methodist tent revival where he got into a heated argument about a verse in the Bible that referred to giants who walked the Earth before people. Hull argued that the passage revealed the gullibility of religious people. Convincing no one at the Methodist tent revival, Hull left, infuriated. He quickly hatched a plan to have a sculptor carve a giant out of a massive block of stone, bury it, and engineer its apparent “discovery.” It is impossible to overstate Hull’s efforts to pull this off. Keep in mind, this is the late 1860s. There were no trucks, as we now know them, no highways. But Hull and a friend went from central NY to Iowa, where he paid a team of men to quarry a 10-foot-tall block of stone. Hull told them he was making a statue of Abraham Lincoln. He then had the stone taken to sculptors in Chicago who carved a figure that looked like Hull, himself, if he were a giant that had been petrified. The statue was treated with acid and stains and it was pounded with knitting needles to make the surface look like skin with pores. After swearing the sculptors to secrecy, Hull had the 3,000 pound stone giant loaded onto a rail car and shipped to central NY.
By this point, Hull had spent nearly 3,000 dollars on this hoax. That’s close to 60,000 dollars today. He had the giant buried in a huge hole on his cousin’s farm and did nothing for an entire year. Hull’s cousin, who was in on the hoax, hired a team of local men to dig a well on the property – precisely where the stone giant had been buried. The Cardiff Giant became an absolute sensation. It was national news. Hundreds of people came to the farm each day to see the colossus. Every one of them paid a 50-cent entrance fee. The story of the Cardiff Giant has countless epilogues, but two are especially relevant: Some people thought the giant was a carved statue. Less than two months later Hull himself publicly – and with much fanfare – revealed this was true and that he fabricated the whole thing. But some people still believed the stone giant proved the Biblical passage about the giants who lived before humans.
Even after geologists and other experts declared the statue was bunk, theologians and preachers still defended its authenticity. This was precisely the outcome that Hull predicted. History has not recorded the degree to which he gloated about this for the rest of his life. Though it’s not clear how that sort of thing might be measured, it seems like, in this instance, it could have been – partly because Hull then sold the giant statue for 23,000 dollars. That’s the equivalent of more than 530,000 dollars today. The second epilogue is about the man who bought the statue and the man who wanted to buy it. It was purchased by a horse trader named David Hannum, who took the statue to Syracuse where he made a small fortune exhibiting it. Showman P. T. Barnum offered Hannum 50,000 dollars for the statue, and, when Hannum declined, Barnum hired men to secretly make a wax cast of the statue and re-create it. Barnum displayed his giant in New York City and said that Hannum’s colossus in Syracuse was a hoax. When word of this reached Hannum, he said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Though the saying has been mistakenly attributed to Barnum.
